Sweden finds huge deposit of rare earth minerals

It is funny as hell when fossil fuel proponents claim mining materials for an EV future is bad for the environment.

Do they not see the irony?

Back in reality space:

Nabeel Mancheri, secretary-general of the Global Rare Earth Industry Association, says a lot more work is needed to determine the quality of the deposit.

"Economically speaking, these are not 'reserves' yet. You still need a lot of drilling, a lot of testing, and you don't have the full information about what quality the ore grade is yet," he told DW.

In Europe, there are heavy regulatory barriers to the mining and production of critical raw materials and it does not currently mine raw earths. As a result, the EU is heavily dependent on China and other countries for them.

However, Mancheri says establishing a mining industry is still only half the job. "Once you have the mining, you also need to establish the processing industry," he said, referring to the complex and hugely energy intensive processes of isolating and refining rare earths.

The beginning of the end of Europe’s dependency on China for precious rare earth materials may lie buried deep under the rugged reaches of northern Sweden, well above the Arctic Circle.

Sweden’s iron-ore miner LKAB said Thursday it has identified "significant deposits" in Lapland of rare earth elements that are essential for the manufacture of smartphones, electric vehicles and wind turbines.

The government-owned company that mines iron ore at Kiruna, almost 1,000 kilometers north of Stockholm, said there are more than 1 million tons of rare earth oxides.

Obviously a lot smarter than you if you think the important thing in this are kickbacks.

It must be technically possible to get to the material, it must be economically feasible to take it, and the deeply hostile to mining EU must approve of the operation.

licensing takes 10-15 years and Lapland has indigenous people with rights there.

nothing is going to happen soon.

it will be interesting to see how Greta deals with the conflict.

Look for Sweden to become the Worlds largest Mineral Bath House attractions soon!

I can still remember when Mineral Wells, Texas was a Hotspot for mineral water enthusiasts- from all over the world!

I doubt in the end Vietnam sides with the West in this war.
The Nine-Dash Line

Despite sharing Communism, Vietnam and China have always been mortal enemies and are even more so today. The same with North Korea. The latest Chinese threat is their continuing aggression to control all of the South China Sea. Brunei, with practically no military and huge oil deposits is in even more clear and present danger.

No.

God bless socialist Sweden
What of the Sami people?

The US has rare earths as well.
You don't see Americans running to harvest them.

The environmental destruction will be massive where ever it occurs so Fuck the Samis, right?

Kill Laplanders for Dick Cheney.

And that there is almost no infrastructure, that it will need to be built, and that they need a lot of power when Europe is in a long term energy crisis all make the odds longer that this will ever happen. Also everything done in the far North is more difficult and more expensive.
