It's my understanding that the nominee must get a majority of those who are voting...thus 218 with everyone present and voting in the House.

Every representative that votes 'present' lowers the number of members available to vote, which lowers the number necessary to win the majority. This is considered a compromise by the 'Never McCarthy' group. They won't vote for him, they just won't participate.

Given that, it also lowers the number that Jeffries needs, but I'm sure the math works out where McCarthy can 'win' with 213 or 214 if enough members vote 'present'.

We might just see a former Republican House/Senate member get the nomination.

There a plenty of sane retired Republicans who would actually get something done, which is NOT what the majority of Republicans are interested in.
