Android is based on Linux. Like any program that is a fork of another program, it drifts further from its origin over time but Android still runs on a Linux kernel.

I used to be pretty fluent in Unix. I believe it's a derivative of Linux. In the 90's, the company I worked for migrated from a pile of garbage mainframe that took up 500 square feet and required constant AC, to a RISC box a fraction of the footprint. The OS was Unix, and even though I was a manager in a totally other department they trusted me to be the system admin. I had root access and could have brought the whole company to my knees, if I'd wanted! :)
