I think what has really increased the amount of public shootings in America is the fact that the internet allows for unstable people to find an echo chamber. Shootings were rare before the internet because your average lunatic had nobody to share his thoughts and beliefs with. Today, if you have a grudge against society, you can easily find people online who share your sentiment. This empowers would-be shooters to take bigger, scarier steps.
