By limiting the number of doors that need to be guarded, you have hardened the target.
By arming teachers who are trained in the use of firearms, you harden the target.

Teachers are teachers, not soldiers.

Sure they do! I am just saying that locking doors is no guarantee- BUT I DO BELIEVE THERE SHOULD ONLY BE ONE ENTRANCE AND EXIT (And they should be guarded by carrying guards) in grade schools, kindergartens, and Jr. Highs. High School- that's impossible to have just one entrance and exit because our High Schools are laid out as a series of buildings and structures on a campus with sports centers and fields etc. High Schools rely on more security officers to keep them safe, MORE SECURITY PRESENCE!
This is the way my community operates. My city even parks some their older unused squad cars on school campuses as decoys to deter crimes on school campuses, and a lot of them are actually driven and parked there because our policemen and women work there part-mine as security officers.
Just like our theaters and Shopping Malls, most of the armed guards you see in the schools here are actually Mesquite policemen, working as part-time security but in full police uniform. They usually work 4 hour shifts so that it don't interfere with their full-time jobs as Mesquite Police OFFICERS!
The Mesquite Independent School District and the Mesquite Police Department closely work together strategically to insure the safety of the kids and teachers,
I am very proud of them and our kids feel safe here. Most school kids love these cops and knowing them by their first names. It's a great relationship our kids have with the Police here, while growing up and knowing them from seeing them at school everyday. Our policemen/women are celebrities with the kids here!
If you ask a lot of these kids what they want to be when they grow up- many girls and boys alike will say- "I want to grow up to be a police officer"!

Given the ethnic/racial dynamics of the area and the local cops, I would be hesitant to blame racism for the totally fucked up response by the cops. I can't say for certain why they acted as they did, but in my view, heads should roll in that department for this incident.

Umm, Earl? Ever here of a "fire door"? I'm sure they had one or two at the schools of your education whatever level you reached.
Put on your socks and shoes, toddle down to your local fire dept. and get educated as to why buildings have more than one entrance and exit.
Then ask yourself, would a locked back door have made this nut say, "Oh fudge, a locked door! Oh well, I'll just go back home and sit with Granny's corpse until the cops come."
