The best home defense gun is an AR15 in 5.56 with .223 varment loads. Minimal penetration and will hurt. If you go 20ga. I would use #4 birdshot. Nothing is going to spread at close range and birdshot will do the job.
As for 9mm or other handgun rounds, penetration is your enemy. YouTube ammo penetration before you make a decision.
