April 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday appeared receptive to making it easier for public school employees to more freely express their religious views, signaling it would side with a Christian former high school football coach in Washington state who refused to stop leading prayers with players on the field after games.

The court's conservative justices appeared prepared to allow such expression of religious views despite concerns that in a public school setting this could be seen as coercive to students or a governmental endorsement of a particular religion in violation of the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.

"He's the one who chose to publicize his prayer by doing it on the 50-yard line. He didn't do it on the side. He didn't just bow his head. He got on a knee at the very center of the field," liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor said.

Justice Elena Kagan mentioned Supreme Court precedents that let schools discipline teachers for activity that "puts a kind of undue pressure, a kind of coercion on students to participate in religious activities when they may not wish to."

They weren't employed by the Government nor kneeling on Government property
I realize that. i was just tossing it in. The complaint here though by Soto. seems to be about teh "degree" of praying.. The 50 yard line is more aggrevating then the sidelines.

Her argument is it might "pressure"other students (snowflakes)
So the rest of us are supposed to toss away our religious freedom because someone might be offended?
This isn't Saudi Arabia

Seems clear violation of church and state. Clearly a coach influences who plays and who does not. Many are looking for college scholarships in football.

That was one of the arguments, it got so much attention from the conservative Judges because it wasn't part of the first case back in 2019, but the essence of the case is still focused upon a government employee conducting publicly religions prayer services on government land

In the end, guarantee, they will come out with a very narrow ruling that will pretty much resolve none of the larger questions but allow both sides to say they won. This Court is heavily partisan, and with the other two big cases due in June they don't want to add a third controversial decision so close to an election

I highly doubt SCOTUS will side with the coach. Even after the game, he is still a government employee, on school property, during a school event. You can't lead prayers. That would be like a school teacher leading prayer after class, in the classroom.

US commission: Cite Afghanistan for religious persecution

Afghanistan should join a list of the “worst of the worst” violators of religious freedom in the wake of the Taliban’s return to power, a U.S. advisory body is recommending to the State Department.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, in its annual report issued Monday, says religious minorities have “faced harassment, detention and even death due to their faith or beliefs” since the Taliban reimposed its harsh interpretation of Sunni Islam on Afghanistan. It also cited attacks on religious minorities by an Islamic State affiliate that is an enemy of the Taliban.

Did the players have to take place in these pray vigils?!! Next it will be pray before class in public schools?!!

We need that
separation between church and state! Suppose the coach was a Muslim or Buddhist?

Excellent! I hope the cameras are rolling when, after the next h.s. football game in Podunk TX is over, the local Satanists perform an unholy ritual at center field in honor of their Dark God.

The plaintiff is a pseudo Xtian who just wants ppl to think he's some holy dude. He forgot this whole bit:

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matt. 6: 5-6)
