A right-winger started the oppo research on Trump. When it became clear that nothing was stopping the stupid unpatriotic Repugs from nominating Trump, he dropped it. Hillary's campaign picked it up. Oppo research is part of our politics.

A trial following impeachment is meant to have something to do with innocence. If a President is found not to have done what he is charged with, and if the alleged conduct he is found not to have done reasonably merited removal from office if he HAD done it, then he can fairly be deemed to have been found "innocent". In a fraudulent proceeding like the Trump impeachment trial, on the other hand, these concepts have no application; they only should have had application. Nixon resigned because he believed he would have been convicted, i.e., not found "innocent".

No. A Senator can believe the impeachment articles are accurate still not merit removal. Nothing to do with guilt or innocence. As one impeachment manager said, it is about fitness for office.

And if I recall correctly, the Senate wouldn't even allow witnesses or testimony. A somewhat similar situation would be a grand jury handing down an indictment, the case is sent to a circuit court jury, but the judge doesn't allow any testimony or witnesses -- just has the jury vote on whether the accused is guilty.
