My experience with people who think government is bad is that is usually just a manifestation of their own personal insecurities.
If they say they can't trust government, what they're really saying is that no one can trust THEM.
Government works perfectly fine as long as you elect competent people to it, but if you choose to not vote, or vote for morons, then you're going to get the government lazy, moronic people deserve.
More than a "few others," just about any service industry is best run without the profit motive, we've seen it in legalities, education, penology, public health, infrastructure, energy, communication, and public service, America's history is full of examples

My mother was Canadian and I lived for several years in Canada and their health care is a HUGE, mixed bag.
Good if you are broke. Lousy for almost everyone else. And the wait times are insane.
Plus, you are treated like a number because they have NO incentive to treat you otherwise.
Yet, the private healthcare places there (yes, Canada does have some) treat you fantastically - because they have to or you won't go there.
Infrastructure?
Public transit is ALWAYS overpriced, subsidized, shit.
That cost taxpayers gigantic amounts of money.
Plus - the Interstate Highways are why there are no high speed rails across the nation.

The state of public education is debatable, but regardless, it is not just a question of educating kids, but rather educating every kid, and private schools have advantages that public schools do not, for beginners, private schools can pick students and flush those that don't want, a luxury public schools do not
In health, who would do the work of say the FDA, CDC, EPA or dozens of other Government agencies responsible for public health? Who would provide the funds for research? If such a private entity was created it would operate based upon profit, if it wasn't profitable, it wouldn't get done
Nothing moves in infrastructure without out first starting with the Government, when was the last time a private entity built a bridge? And will they build that bridge needed if it didn't turn a profit?
And I noted an array of other areas where Government does it best, not saying Government is perfect, or doesn't make mistakes, but to imply it does everything wrong and isn't needed is inane, if nothing else it maintains the conditions that have allowed private citizens and companies to advance
