Corporations and the wealthy support Democrats as much as Republicans. The bottom half pays virtually no income tax because the top 50% pay 96% of federal income taxes (over 100% if we include the earned income tax credit).
The argument is that government programs often benefit the wealthy more than the beneficiaries. Food stamps program pays farmers, food producers, truckers, super markets, and even fast food places. The money going to those businesses is far more than the few hundred dollars going to the food stamp recipients. Many of those businesses engage in illegal activities and pay the recipient cash for about 60% of the value of the stamps.
Medicare and Medicaid goes to drug companies, clinics and hospitals, doctors, dentists, chiropractors. Kids who get unneeded back adjustments or root canals are scams to make money for the provider. Medicare estimates it has $60 billion in fraud.
Pell Grants that go to for-profit private colleges provide terrible education and shut down in the middle of the semester. Almost all their income is from federal funds.
These are examples of programs designed to help the low income but primarily benefit the people receiving the money.
