Back when the Republicans were sane, they came upon the idea that the best way to break up communist aggression was to do it from the inside through free trade. Nixon goes to China. We did it with the Russians too. Both are running into problems from the inside due to their populations tasting free trade.

At the moment, Russia has a nutjob in charge. How long can he go before the Russians take him out? Xi is still sane enough to know there are limits, but he's subject to human frailty too. How long before absolute power corrupts absolutely in both countries?

Do you Putin's typically high approval will wane much over these minor incursions into Ukraine? Winnie the Pooh has to worry that the many social-demographic and economic problems facing the PRC will upend the CCP, otherwise he's more untouchable than Putin.

Nixon's Cold War strategy toward China was a brilliant move with obvious long-term consequences, but, I doubt anyone would be willing to cozy up to Putin in order to undermine the PRC (or that it could work).

It's a full scale invasion of Ukraine. I doubt it but time will tell. Putin threatening Thermonuclear War twice in one week is the act of a desperate man. If we're all dead or dying of radiation poison soon, you'll know he was fucking nuts.

At least China is sane compared to Putin himself.

He's been in power for as long as I've been following politics. My guess is he's just trying to unease everyone, and he's frustrated that the invasion hasn't gone as well as he planned.
