Methland: Not Hannity's Disney America!

I just can't see it being worth it.

Can you see people wasting money on cigarettes?

It's physically addictive. People need it or else they feel terrible. That's why it's reinforced. People vastly overrate their ability to resist becoming an addict when they first try it, and after that they're hooked.

Well it most certainly isn't. The thing that's scary about freebase/crack is that one hit. Just one good hit and the euphoric rush is so intense that you can literally become addicted in that one hit. I have seen it happen. I lost a lot of friends to that shit back in the late 80's and early 90's. Don't even be tempted to try it. The warning that you can become addicted in one hit is not hyperbole.

You can't get physically addicted in one hit. But just like they vastly overrestimated their ability to resist the temptation to take a hit the first time, they will the second and third... etc... until they are physically addicted. But the psychological addiction can definitely come in one hit.

Man, that's why I've never tried any (illegal) drugs. I don't trust myself.

Dude your talking based about what you've read in a book or on a website. I've seen the shit happen.

He is and he isn't. I wouldn't live in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas or South Carolina if my kids had to go to public school there. I'd have to dig up the cash to send them to a private school to get a descent education. It's a non-issue here in Ohio. In a lot of cases the public schools here are better than the private schools. Particularly protestant perochial schools.

I can't speak for Alabama, Tennessee or Florida as I'm not familiar with their schools but their poor reputation proceeds them. Georgia is ok and North Carolina and Virginia's public schools are very good. Texas is all over the place. They have some of the best and some of the worst public schools in the nation but that's probably to be expected in a state the size of Texas.

Most of Alabama's schools suck but that's because they have intense brain drain. Alabama actually has the number one high school in the nation as of 2004, my alma mater. And another two that usually rank in the top 20 high schools in America. All of the smart kids apply and go there, leaving the rest of the Alabama schools as a veritable intellectual wasteland.

You want to keep knocking the South but California is no bundle of sunshine either. 1/3, 33% of Oakland high school students drop out.

LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified) had a 37% drop out rate in '07 which they lowered in '08.

I don't know all the numbers in the South but they sure aren't the only area of the country have academic challenges.

Haha I was like: Where the fuck is my HS? I know we haven't dropped this far!

Turns out we are now on the list of schools deemed "Too Elite to be Considered".

The Public Elites
Some schools didn't make our list because their students are too good. The best of the best.

NEWSWEEK's Challenge Index is designed to recognize schools that challenge average students, and not magnet or charter schools that draw only the best students in their areas. These top performers, listed below in alphabetical order, were excluded from the list of top high schools because, despite their exceptional quality, their sky-high SAT and ACT scores indicate they have few or no average students.

Right now all the top 5 highschools in America are from the South. I'm telling you, it was the case in Alabama and it seems to be the case elsewhere that all the smart kids go to a handful of schools and leave the rest in gutter.

But they're all private schools aren't they?

Maybe it's some sort of regulation that southern states lack? But that should also apply to mountain states...

Of course I can, first because they are much cheaper than these drugs and you have no worries about going to jail for it. Also the benefits are more impressive, increased concentration and eye-hand coordination for instance. Did you know that many surgeons wear nicotine patches during surgery because of these benefits?

I can also see it being sometimes worth it with illegal drugs, marijuana for instance. It lasts much longer, and for your money you get much more of the rather dubious benefit.

I can't imagine wasting that much money on a 5 minute high.

Seeing the effects alcohol has on you, may I say, it is a good thing, he he!
Paranoia runs deep, into your heart it will creep!

Touche!

I have A.D.D. and already take drugs for that. Part of the A.D.D. I have is addictive personality (this board for example) so knowing myself I just decided I wasn't going to do (illegal) drugs.
