GOP Hysterical Over Hate Crimes Bill Because It Would Protect Gay People

While I am also opposed to hate crimes, because it does seem to favor one class of victim over the other, I wonder how many of you would favor getting rid of crimes that punish those who victimize children more harshly than those who commit the same crime against adults? It is basically the same logic, we find those that rape and sodomize children as worse than those that rape and sodomize adults. Does that make the rape of a woman less horrible than the rape of a child? I don't think it does. But we make distinctions nonetheless.

I believe it does. An adult has a larger capacity for understanding that they are not the cause of the crime and the capability to seek vengeance that no child has. The child is far more defenseless, innocent, and usually further damaged and often more silent about their pain.

Both crimes are awful, but yes. I believe that the crime against the child is worse for many reasons including those outlined above.

Yes, equal rights under the law! Good idea. Children aren't special.

And crimes against people based on their ethnicity, sexual orientation etc, are designed not just to victimize the person against whom the crime was committed but to cause fear and apprehension in all people similarly situated. The Klan didn't burn crosses in a yard just to scare the home owner, it was a warning to all. Lynchings were not meant to just kill the person lynched but to warn all against being in the wrong part of town, sleeping with the wrong color woman, seeking rights. So hate crimes actually victimize more than just the intended victim. Shouldn't they also be punished accordingly?

They should be charged with a hate crime if the reason they jumped you was because you were white and not just to rob you. If their victims have been both black and white, then, it is not a hate crime, but just mugging. If they target white men only, then it is a hate crime.

I know of two men who mugged gay men in KC, Missouri in the Park downtown, because they were easy marks, but one time they picked the wrong gay man and he told the pair, "the only thing I like better than sucking cock is kicking ass". The two learned their lesson and quit mugging in the park.

Oh, and I am sorry, I don't know how I missed this adventure of yours. I hope your healing continues.

I think it is just the other side of the pendulum from the lynchings and eventually, we will reach a middle once more. There are degrees of crime and the rule of law outlines those as you have stated, so maybe, we will begin to follow the rule of law? Is it too much to ask.

Oh, when it comes to children being abused, I lose all sympathy for the perverts.

I think crimes against the old should be prosecuted more severely, also. They showed a scene of MSNBC news once of a woman with a walker getting beat and mugged by a much younger man. I was horrified, it was absolutely brutal. This woman was going to church and was absolutely defenseless.

All beatings are brutal.

I guess I have become desensitized to some degree when it is viral young men or women.
The violence in movies made me do it

While it does appear to be the same reasoning, I think there is a difference. Kids typically have no chance at defending themselves from an adult. Not only do they face the physical disadvantage, but also the mental one (due to lack of experience in life).

Good point though... it does provoke thought on the issue. Especially in the case of rape that you mentioned. I would say, no.. it is no less horrible for the woman than the child. Thus perhaps the punishment should be just as harsh for the coward that rapes a woman as the coward that does so to a child.

Slightly off topic of the thread... but I think every kid (especially girls) and every woman should take basic self defense courses.

Sorry, but unless she was black or gay, and the perp was white and straight, no hate crime.
