It's a civil rights violation, anyone can see that, doesn't matter if it's done for some noble reason.
If someone is using more energy it will show up on their bill and they have natural incentive to handle it.

If you don't want to talk to someone at your door offering you free insulation or advice on how to heat your home you can just tell them to feck off. It's really not a big deal.

I think obtaining search warrants and throwing people in jail based on thermal imaging is a far more wide ranging use of thermal imaging technology than using it to offer practical advice on how to lower your bills. But hey, that's just me.

There pretty much are none in the UK. Liberal rights are respected but they aren't entrenched.

Well, there is the European Court of Human Rights. It would be unpopular to break the treaty that established it, but it could be done by simple majority vote.

Different councils take different approaches. If the local Conservative council wants to go down that route and people don't like it they can kick them out at the next local election.

When I say wide ranging, I mean this town is using it on ALL housing, whereas police use thermal imaging for only CERTAIN properties where they suspect pot is being grown.

Dano what planet have you been on? Yes. They pretty much do. Detecting excessive energy use that can be indicative of anything from a marijuana grow room to a clean room for psychedelic mushrooms. We used to see the choppers at least a few times a week in my old neighborhood.

Yeah that Christmas tree thing is one of my personal favorites.

Cooper was a narco in Texas for a long time, and had something like 600 busts to his name. After he quit, he put out this video showing ways to fool police dogs and smuggle product in your car. It is much beloved by dealers now, but people were very suspicious when it first came out.
