Was it me?
Free Trade also means the right to say no to deals which harm your population. Or it should mean that, if not, then it's coerced trade.
Black Monday was caused by that, the immense Recession that followed was exacerbated by policy implemented in an attempt to "help". Just like you believe you would be "helping" with a tariff. Thankfully people who actually read a history book will make different decisions. But the depression was caused by a speculative wallstreet bubble and collapse. I understand the trade war scenario abstractly, I just don't think it applies much to the depression, as a causal factor.
You said that before? Oh well. I agree with that. And I would support any measure which would support the american worker, limiting immigration, limiting trade partners to those who have a similar concept of individual rights, and humane treatment.
Wasn''t the the depression caused by a wallstreet bubble and bust? is that down the memory hole now?
My point is just that I don't take Asshat seriously, so my mocking comment was not intended as a way of avoiding addressing the issue. I just don't find him worthy of engaging.

I didn't mean to say that tariffs caused the Great Depression (if I did say that), I meant to say they exacerbated an already heinous economic situation, and with other poor policies (raising taxes on the "rich" (producers) was one) extended what we now call the Great Depression. There is no reason to reproduce that same result.
The banker bailouts were last month. Now its time to redistribute to Charlie Rangles's neighborhoods, and to build infrastructure without using professionals and white male construction workers.Distributing to the low classes? What about the banker bailouts? Are they low class?
But I do agree this will only get worse unless we reverse our ideology on "globalization". Destroying america is actually the point of globalization.
Which created that bubble that you keep going on about.I heard black monday was caused by excessive buying on margin.
Which created that bubble that you keep going on about.
When the bubble pops, if the government acts it can be either detrimental or positive towards a solution to the problem at hand. The actions of the government can exacerbate and cause the extension of the already created problem.
Right. And Massive stimulus spending is a temporary and idiotic measure, which pulls society towards totalitarianism.
What we need to do is fix the fundamentals of our economy. Consumers needs money to spend, that comes from jobs (in a healthy normal, non totalitarian economy), so stopping jobs from going elsewhere is a prime concern. Protectionist measures of many varieties achieve this.
Agree. Especially if it is done "superfastrightnow becausei'mtryingto get elected!"
And yes, I was asking what ones you would use. That was the point of the question mark at the end of my first post.
I never argued that. I said Tariffs caused it to worsen, even told you exactly what happened, and specifically asked what other measures you would use. I even told you that I think America First measures are necessary. So you've given up that bullshit argument about "protectionism" causing the depression?

I speak against one specific measure. Tariffs would be bad right now, they would be even worse than they were in 1929.
At least read the post so you don't sound like a child who can't pass a reading comprehension test.
It was caused by one thing. It was exacerbated by another. Keep up.But the depression was caused by speculation bubble, from currency being unhinged from the gold standard. Not tariffs.
And neither of them were protectionism or tariffs. It was caused by one thing. It was exacerbated by another. Keep up.
What measures would you use?
I have been clear, you have been avoiding answering.
Only if you can't understand direct cause and effect. When America instituted tariffs, Europe answered in kind and the consumer was the only one punished. Those who least needed it were caused to pay more for products that they already could ill afford. Less was purchased, the tariffs did the opposite of what they intended. And neither of them were protectionism or tariffs.
see above.

It is simply stupid to charge people who can't afford it more for stuff they already can ill afford in the name of "protectionism". Tariffs need to come later in the recovery.
I already gave examples of one form of protectionism I fully support, that of ending illegal immigration so Americans can get the jobs they need to pay the bills.
Now, starting with that. What measures other than Tariffs would you use to protect America. Be specific and quit trying to avoid the question.

"I would use everything" isn't an answer.
What measures would you use to end illegal immigration, for instance.
Tell me about what measures you would implement to incentivize American production....
So forth.
LOL.Everything is my answer. Live with it.
LOL.
So, let's expand on it, because the first thing to do when in a fight against the powers that be is to have a plan. You can't just run around telling everybody what is happening and expect it all to come out okay. What if they believe you and want some direction? You just gonna say, "Do everything!"?
Tariffs later. Gotcha.
What would be the first thing to implement, the one thing that would cause the most protection for Americans?
