I accept that as a great many of us do. You may remember that my son is a police officer, and one of my daughters is a Master Sargent in the military. I accept the neccesary roles of both, though I am as anti war as I am anti racist police.. What’s missing is any trust in the police. Why would we trust them. My police officer son doesn’t trust them. You may also remember that I’ve mentored middle school boys for many years, stopped only by cancer. They don’t trust them and why would they? What are we supposed to say to them? The man in blue is your friend? He is not. Not even to small children. We teach them how to survive encounters with police and how to avoid them.

Jack; It's a binary choice. Biden or Trump. I supported Sanders. I sent money to Sanders. Sanders says Trump is the most dangerous man in America. I believe him. I'll be voting Biden.

Jack: I agree. My position is EVERY community and on a NATIONAL level. Tossing a few peanuts to appease the citizens of a 'jurisdiction' isn't really working for me.

Jack: OK. So we accept the Role of the Police. They seem to be 'Gun Happy'. So the Dialogue should be 'Police Brutality' and how do we curb it. It's been like 6 fucking months, where's the National Dialogue on this and where are the Solutions?

I will vote for Biden as well my friend. But I am fully aware of how democrats can lose again even in the face of the trump horror show and all that we see in front of us. Failing to address the concerns of the Left and ignoring progressives is snatching defeat from the jaws of wghat should be an easy victory.

I speak to a lot of young black voters and progressives of all stripes, all colors. They are not happy with the status quo, not happy with centrists and moderates. That should bea relatively easy fix. All it requires is will and respect for a generation that will ultimately inherit the reigns of power anyway.
 
riots are not going to help the Dems win - even Biden figured this out finally and stuck out his head from the basement to condemn it. way too little and too late after an entire DNC convention of silence...

arguing for more just helps Trump- fine by me

Where's all the 'Police reform' laws being passed? Has Congress repealed the Nixon 'No-Knock' laws? 'Qualified immunity'? Independent Civilian Review Boards'?
You know, maybe all this energy being used to burn down the local Dry Cleaners is being wasted?

Also, on the flip side, there has to be a recognition that the Police have a role to play. You can't walk away from them, hop in your car, and drive off. (not saying that deserves 7 shots in the back, but walking to your car and reaching in is the perfect excuse for the "He went for a Gun" defense)

I'm brand new to this site, but I think I'm going to like your contributions.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I've noticed you touch on two issues: 1.) Progressives settle for a Democratic party that doesn't embrace them. 2.) All good people need to support the Democrats this year because the Republicans cannot address racial reality.

I agree with you on both points. If the Democratic party is supposed to be the more liberal of them, then it needs to start addressing progressives and millennials. It's an old legacy party that operates decades in the past at all times.

Racism never went anywhere. It was pushed into the closet for a long time. The age of Trump welcomed racists out of their closets and into mainstream American culture again. There can be no equivocation for supporting people and a party that sanctions, adopts, and encourages racism. I resist ever viewing political matters as good versus evil, but in 2020, there can be no doubt. No good person can support Trump and what he stands for; and every person who supports Trump and what he stands for is not a good person.

Do you think Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, et al could have learned something from you? I hope you're not teaching kids to resist arrest or attempt taking the cops gun while he's in his cruiser.
Common sense tells me that I'll comply with anybody pointing a gun at me whether it's a cop or a robber or a friend. Anybody.
I'll comply with an unarmed cop for that matter. It's just common sense.

I was once stopped by cops on a dark street in the French Quarter because I was running to my parked car. I guess they suspected I was guilty of something because I was running. I got to my car, locked the door and they banged on the window ordering me to open up. Believe me I was scared shitless.
The last thing I do is try to drive off or resist. I opened up, they searched my car, a let me go after a few questions. Where were you, why were you running, etc. I hope that's what you teach. Glad I don't need to be taught that.

TTQ. A woman calls the Police for some kind of 'domestic' problem. The Police arrive. There's some kind of 'altercation'.

So. Do you think it's a GOOD IDEA to walk away from the Police and attempt to enter your car? (racist or not, this gives the Police an excuse to use 'force' to stop you)
(we'll leave out the getting shot in the back 7 times, which is really at the heart of the PROBLEM)

I can't argue with a word of this. Hopefully Biden won't let them (or you) down too much then... I am certain he will govern more left than
his comfort zone given conditions. I think he will attempt some sort of national police reform, will do some type of forgiveness
on the student loan front, restore and move more towards universal healthcare/single payer and possibly more money for schools?

My greatest interest is in healing racial wounds, restoring respect in our federal govt, obeying the scientists, holding Trump to account personally for his actions in criminal context, and addressing climate change
in a robust job creating way. I don't know if there is a political solution to what I feel is the most important problem, and that is a right wing media that has no respect whatsoever for truth.

If nothing else, Biden will restore the appearance of dignity to the office of the executive of the US and he will AT LEAST listen to all sides, and not have daily tweet storms to morons
like the ones who post here.

The heart of the problem is some people just won’t listen to cops.

And when it happens that one of the ‘non-listeners’ is black and things go south, the whole country is turned upside down for a week. Or months. Or for a summer.

And no one even fricking knows if the victims race was a factor.

It’s insanity.

The progressive resurgence is a reaction to the fascism of the right. So I blame the far right and especially their media for EVERYTHING pulling this country apart. There are people out there who think they can cut the cord that connects the extremes. That cord is the moderates holding the US together. I hope it is as strong as you suggest. There is a reason peaceful marches in the day turn into looting and arson at night and cops and vigilantes are killing black men and boys. I know one thing for sure only, it isn't moderates doing that. Some people INTEND to destroy this country.

Jack: He wasn't 'shot while walking away', ... he was shot while 'attempting to get in his car and leave the scene or attempting to retrieve a weapon'. THAT will be the Police response. NOT a REAL SMART move on the Black guy's part.

I can more or less agree with this. The social climate in this country is becoming very polarized.
