Because both groups want to scare you, and all it takes is to make it look scary. And it isn't just the same rate, it is exactly the same ammunition. Hunting is regulated. So if I wanted to use my AR15 for hunting I would have to make sure to only load 3 rounds.

The AK is lighter than most center fire hunting rifles, but you know that, right? (LOL!)

Most big game hunters carry hi-powered rifles much more powerful than the AK, all of mine are more powerful. Even my ground hog and coyote rifles are more powerful.

The mass shootings use it because they know it will scare you because you think it looks scary. The cops use actual military grade weapons that have the ability to go full auto. So not the same thing.

I never tried to see how fast I could fire my M1-A, but accurately firing 10 rounds in 60 seconds isn't as easy as you might think.
