Good thought. I have trouble keeping people straight, though, so I'll still find myself in threads only to realize, after typing a response, that I'm not allowed to post. It's frustrating. I know I'm supposed to check the top, first, to see who is banned, but as a practical matter I forget.
Yes, I'm aware that I'm supposed to check the top to see who is banned, before posting. But it's not a natural thing -- I go from reading the headline directly to reading the body of the text. It seems like it would save everyone both time and clutter if it simply didn't show up from our view, unless our participation were permitted. It would also give people an incentive not to ban people, since there'd be no using it as a one-way propaganda method.

I don't tend to post at the top level very often, because I hate adding to the scroll. It's infuriating to put the time and effort to write a well-researched, lengthier post, only to have it vanish into the oblivion of page two a few minutes later, unseen, because of a bunch of duplicative threads and one-liner entries.
I don't have a problem with your proposal although I don't give a shit either way. When someone thread bans me, it tells me more about that person than any post they could make. All I was addressing was that there IS a way to see if you're banned BEFORE you draft a long answer and get a message you can't post.
Whether or not those they don't want posting can see it wouldn't be an incentive to not ban. If their intention is for you to not be able to post, they likely don't give a shit whether you see it their thread or not.

Judging by the people I see doing it, and the content of their posts, I strongly suspect many of them very much want the banned people to see it. In fact, right in this thread, one of the dumber members of the forum was reacting gleefully to the notion that someone might have tried to post in one of his threads just to get the "you are not allowed" error message. He said it really made his day. I suspect that although he might be unusual in being stupid enough to state it that way, many who use the threadban feature are looking for something similar -- they're trolls who want to push their propaganda in a way their political enemies will see it (thus, not confining it to moderated forums reserved for their own kind), but fearing actual responses.

how about, if you've been banned you just stay out of it......
That would be a lot easier if I simply didn't see threads from which I'd been banned, rather than me having to click on a thread and load it even to know if I've been banned, right?

When that happens, copy and paste into a new thread and ban the OP.
