what if voting was manditory?

Is this really you?

If so, what a handsome young man...…...let your haters be you're motivators...…..they will hate on you on this board.

Thank you.

That would be me.

Not so young.

And those pictures are flattering. I've got others that show the 82 years a lot more clearly.

Blacks never have and never will vote for racist whites no matter what party label you all give them.
To insinuate otherwise is deceitful. Just saying.

Wrong again. Blacks were loyal Republicans until about 1934 when they began a transition to Democrats. That Democratic affiliation strengthened in the 1960s during the civil rights movement.

The American south has some of the least educated people in our country, Flash...

...and the American south is predominantly Red.

Deal with this the way you will.

Are you claiming the blacks and Hispanics in southern states are voting Republican? The southern whites with lower levels of education vote Republican.

The (large number) of blacks and Hispanics vote heavily Democratic. They are also the two groups with the lowest educational level according to the Census Bureau and every other source. Thus, the groups with the lowest educational level are the most Democratic.

This is a simple fact supported by years of political science voting studies. I think you have a knee jerk reaction because you make a value judgement that it is a negative description which you object to. You do not have to accept facts as negatives (example, young people vote in low numbers).

what if voting was manditory?

Take a look at the rubbish politicians that the Australians have to suffer.

Besides- spoiling your ballot in protest is nothing like as satisfying as refusing to participate in the broken system.

Flash, if you want to continue to kid yourself that low education people vote Democratic Party...and high education people vote Republican Party...do so.

No one is harmed by the mistake...not even you.

BOTTOM LINE: See which states are the lowest educated states...and you will see that most are RED STATES.

The least educated states are: Tennessee, Nevada, Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, West Virginia, and Mississippi.

Those are facts!

I think less people should be voting, not more. Now, I would never dream of disenfranchising anyone but that's the reality of our political culture today. Too many ill-informed voters at the ballot box. Mandatory voting would exacerbate that problem tenfold.

Not to mention, as others have said, policy like that has a distinctly authoritarian tone. Just because you think people should be doing something, doesn't mean you should make them.

then you don't believe in Democracy

I believe in Democracy

everyone should vote

If you had compulsory voting here, the heap of spoiled votes would be larger and even more imaginative/funny. As the descendants of convicts, Australians are afraid of their goalers and very law-abiding, I'm told.

I don't believe in forced voting

it was just a conversation starter

I believe in automatic registration to vote

a citizen is just automatically registered to vote and sent the information once they turn 18.

it would increase voting

So republicans hate the idea

Duw, you look like family, mun! Always wondered what happened to my great-grandmother's brothers and sisters over there when she went to Argentina! But in that case, why do you look like my father's family, who never went anywhere but the cricket field, the billiard hall, the choir and the boozer?

What if voting was mandatory?

Then we'd live in a totalitarian state and your choices would be limited indeed.

I don't think its the correct idea of the USA

I want automatic registration to vote at 18 (hell I would like it at 16)

the right should like that idea

but they cant win when more people vote

"I want automatic registration to vote at 18 (hell I would like it at 16)" e #134
To drive a car such teens are required by government to prove proficiency / competency.

Would it make sense to have a LOWER standard for voting?

Frank,

You are not reading carefully or you are making unwarranted assumptions about what I actually said or believe.

I never said "high education people vote Republican" or anything close to that and actually said the opposite.

What I said was the groups with the lowest educational levels (blacks and Hispanics) vote the most (highest percentage) Democratic. That is true regardless of the state in which they reside.

Those with a college degree are fairly evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Clinton won a plurality of college graduates (52% v. 43%) and Trump won the vote of white college graduates (49% v. 45%). College graduates voted more Democratic in 2016 than other recent elections in which they were more evenly divided (Obama over Romney by 50%-48% among college graduates).

The fact that southern states have lower educational levels and vote Republican does not mean that blacks and Hispanics in those states are not voting Democratic. Blacks voted 88% Clinton in 2016 and Latinos voted 66% for Hillary. Whites with a college degree and without a college degree vote more Republican in the South while whites with a college degree vote more Democratic in blue states.

I do not think either group is smarter, superior, more knowledgeable than the other. I think you are most liberals reject the fact that those with the lowest educational levels vote the most Democratic because you need to denigrate the Trump supporters as "uneducated."

I have nothing in common with Trump or Trump supporters, but neither do I have any sympathy with those on either side who hate, insult, denigrate or fear those on the opposing side.

The is an experiment in social psychology that showed viewers the move "Rocky IV" but let Russian win. In following interviews the viewers were sad and had low self-esteem because the American lost. But, with one group they allowed them to talk about how evil the Russians were and that helped their self-esteem and made them feel better.

They have applied that same principle to 2016. The Democrats (losers) feel better about themselves and the loss if they can see the other side as terrible, evil people. Sometimes anger and hostility can express itself through politics.

Flash dropping some knowledge

Flash dropping some knowledge

Sorry, it is the teacher in me.

Many posters cannot grasp that a person's beliefs about an issue do not necessarily coincide with their policy preferences.

For example, if they don't want the children of illegals to get U. S. citizenship they claim the Constitution does not grant them citizenship at birth.

If a poster argues that all those born in the U. S. are citizens they are called liberals who want open borders. They cannot understand that because a person believes the Constitution (and federal law) grant a person citizenship if born here does not always mean they want the children of illegals to get citizenship.

You are preaching to the choir sir and that's why I love reading your posts. It's the inability of many (myself included) to separate the personal from the issue being discussed.

I will accept that I may be mistaken about your take on this issue...but the lead up to what I said involved comments from several people with comments of agreement from others. If I am mistaken...I apologize.

In any case, everything you said may be correct...but what I said was correct also. There is no doubt whatsoever that the low education states are the REDDEST.

We all have to be careful with regard to characterizing the intelligence of people for the way they vote.

HOWEVER the schism between American conservatives and non-American conservatives has gotten so wide and so...ummm, rubble strewn...that it is my personal consideration that ANYONE voting FOR ANY Republican next Tuesday...is showing contempt and scorn for our nation and for humanity in general.

The reason I so often refer to Donald Trump as an abomination...IS BECAUSE HE IS AN ABOMINATION.

Anything or anyone that supports him or his ideas in any way...IS an affront to what I see as our nation's ethical standing...and quite honestly, to what I see as the basic decency of humanity.

Mind you, I am not saying they have to be stupid or "low information" voters...they may be very intelligent folk...but simply people who do not give a rat's ass about America or humanity.

I am not motivated to say any of that because I am a Democrat or a liberal (I AM NEITHER)...but because I am able to see what Donald Trump is doing to our country and to our people. He disgusts me.
