It is essential for well controlled board operations that site admins. have the authority & means to enforce reasonable site rules.

It is inappropriate that posting members have the ABILITY to pre-ban one another.

As the lead indicates, it's a flagrant opportunity begging for abuse.
And if it is in fact being abused as the lead indicates, it's a problem that demands immediate remedy.

The appropriate remedy for bad speech is not censorship, but good speech.

I can't make you distrust tyranny. If all those hours having to study the opinions of the founding fathers about Parliament, the Crown, and British rule didn't do that, I doubt anything will.

I think the problem starts with trolling. The best solution is the ignore feature. I think it could be improved on but would prob be impracticable.
Once your troll believes you are ignoring they go into workaround mode and perhaps get someone to simply quote the trolls post, change names or other
slightly more inventive techniques to terrorize posters. But the basic ignore works well enough without thread bans, but such are the rules here, so if
someone is going to block me, I'll block them from a corresponding thread of the same nature. Thread bans work a little too well. They become a sword, rather
than a shield.

The simple ignore works because it takes less effort to employ than it does to circumvent, and that is the key to any strategy. I take great pleasure knowing
some troll has spent hour after wasted hour posting nonsense designed to irritate me that I never see. Work, jerk, work. That's just desserts.

Better astill would be if an ignored posters content was tagged so that it could not be visible to person who wishes to ignore that poster even if copied
by a third party.
