huge insect die off

I'd bet that this is one of those things that conservatives will try to talk about positively, like the "hey, it's great that we'll have warmer weather!" lunacy.

This is very bad news.

Indeed this is bad news and scary.

This is different than polar bears dying and far more ominous.

Same indicators of dangerous climate change, but this strikes closer to home.

On how mortality rates differ among races
Deaton: Hispanics [have always had lower mortality rates] than whites. It's a bit of a puzzle that's not fully resolved, to put it mildly. It's always been true that mortality rates have been higher and life expectancy shorter for African-Americans than for whites. What is happening now is that gap is closing and, for some groups, it's actually crossed. What we see in the new work is if you compare whites with a high school degree or less, at least their mortality rates are now higher than mortality rates for African-Americans as a whole. If you compare whites with a high school degree or less with blacks with a high school degree or less, their mortality rates have converged. It's as if poorly educated whites have now taken over from blacks as the lowest rung of society in terms of mortality rates.

Could be about the factual rise of middle-aged white male suicides.

More dead Boomers the better. It's the greatest gift they can give.

Well, the greatest gift they could give is not being born in the first place, but seeing as how they've miserably failed in that endeavor they should attempt to remedy the situation with their death. Only through death may their sins be cleansed from this world.

I gave up the morning newspaper about 2 years ago. They are pretty much worthless liberal rags anyways

They really aren't. While there may be some bias on the editorial pages, the good papers are still outstanding.

People are doing themselves a disservice by buying into Trump's "fake news" thing, or the general vilification of the media. I get the Sunday NYT every week. Last week, there was an extensive article about a woman in the heartland who was losing her factory job because it was moving to Mexico. It mentioned Trump, but only because she was a supporter - it had no political bent at all. But it gave such an emotional & deep insight into what a situation like that means to someone living it - one of those things that should be a must-read for everyone. Heart-wrenching & informative, and it really showed every aspect of it - from the young Mexican worker who was going to benefit, to the co-workers upset that she would train her replacement, to how losing a job like that in an economically challenged area was going to affect everything from how she eats to her daughter being able to go to college.

It was outstanding journalism - as good as any research & writing I've read in my life. There are still many dedicated professionals out there doing the work, and it is important work. They deserve better than to all be lumped into someone's political agenda and dismissed as "fake" or anything but exceptional.

sounds good/interesting. but that's a feature article -i'm talking about routine political coverage which is a steady diet
of fake news from the NYTime/WAPO/NBC etc.
I remind you of the NYTimes coping to "advocacy journalism" ( whatever that is) during the election.
It's gotten worse.

These peeps have an agenda. I look for alternative sources, or sometimes have to look at these-
but I do it knowing they spin. At least recognize that much

This is not a new story and is a product of monocultural agricultural methods that lack biodiversity and are overly reliant on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The consequences could be severe and more immediate than climate change if something went wrong, such as a resistant strain blight infesting a major staple crop, not unlike what occurred during the Irish Potato famine, that could cause famine on a massive scale. One should keep in mind that most insects are benign and are the major source of crop pollination to understand what a potential disaster this could become.

What alternative sources? Who doesn't have an agenda?

The media is not what it was decades ago. It's a 24x7 cycle, and every single outlet has some sort of agenda. It's not nearly as present in the content as the media's detractors would have us believe. It seeps in here or there, but for the most part, the media is filled with professionals doing their jobs, and doing them well.

The media also wants to make money, more than anything. Trump benefitted greatly from that, as they covered him 24x7. He really shouldn't be complaining. As for the "too many negative stories," I don't really see the alternative. Whether you think Trump is doing positive things for the country or not, I don't see how you can argue that it's been amateur hour so far in terms of how he has pursued his agenda, worked with Congress and handled his own staff (19 firings or resignations & counting), and that his hyper-sensitive tweetstorms make for great copy. Trump has brought most of that coverage on himself, and has no one else to blame for it.
