The vast majority of the world's oil reserves are held by State Oil Companies, and the largest oil companies in the world are State Oil Companies. And it has been that way for decades, maybe even half a century or more.
While we think of Exxon Mobil as a behemoth, they are actually a small fry on the world stage.
Saudi Arabia would be very surprised to hear your take that state owned oil companies have been an abject failure. Saudi Aramco has been around for decades, and I was always impressed with the quality of their engineers and scientists.

I should have been more clear and said economies that have state run oil companies. I don't think too many people in America would want a Saudi type econony. We can look at the corruption in Brazil with their state owned oil. Venezuela speaks for itself, etc.
I am surprised you would be impressed with a company that has the highest level of CO2 emissions globally since 1995. You are not a climate change person?
Perhaps a topic for another thread, but I can assure you that a vein of appalling corruption runs though the history of the oil industry, including privately held companies.
If Americans knew about it, I don't think there would be much objection to a Norway Statoil model, or some other state-owned oil company along the model of Norway. .The American people own our offshore mineral resources. It does not belong to Exxon or Shell. The only people who might be against it are the monied interests.
