Trump's lie du jour - murder rate "highest it's been in 47 years"

I don't know lol. I swear, sometimes I think he does it on purpose so the media gets sucked into talking about something they'd rather not.

But who knows. In either event, some of the large urban areas are, literally, no safer than Fallujah. On the campaign trail Trump talked about inner city violence quite a bit and he's demonstrated that he's quite serious about his campaign promises.

Hardly the mark of a liar.

ROFL!!

OMG the outlandish bullshit is simply astounding.

The lying being done by Trumpkins to cover for their messiah never ceases to amaze.

Large urban areas in the US are LITERALLY NO SAFER THAN FALLUJAH!

Yeah, there are IED's lining most streets. Terrorists armed with RPG's. Bombed out husks of buildings everywhere one looks.

I can tell that's going to be the final zinger from every rightie when they've clearly lost a debate here for the next 4 years - 'how are those predictions goin' for ya?'

Hillary won the popular vote. Oh - and I predicted the Comey's letter would sink her.

But please, keep repeating that ad nauseum. It's all you've got.

Interesting thread.....so, what exactly is the murder rate as of 2/7/2017, when he made this claim ?

and then, of course we would have to know the statistics from 1970 to 2/2017 to make a judgement....

Trump has, on occasion, accurately stated a statistic along these lines. A day after talking with the sheriffs, Trump offered a more accurate version of this statistic during an address to the Major Cities Chiefs Association winter conference. And during the second presidential debate, he said, "We have an increase in murder within our cities, the biggest in 45 years."

Do you always cut & paste from Politifact and then include it like it's your own thought?

Murder levels were highest in the '90's - around 8%. Since Obama took office, they've been more in the 5-6% range.

"You know Trumpkins at JPP don't have to stick to the topic at hand." ZG #79

Understood.
"Topic Drift" is not merely an inevitable consequence of multi-page threads. In some cases it's serendipitous.

I don't mind insightful comments that add interest or information to a discussion.

What offends me is when posters can't defend their own position,
or refute their opponents,
so they grotesquely falsely mis-attribute, even by false quotation a position never remotely taken.
Then they ridicule that, and pretend they've scored a brilliant coup.

Not always....

You wouldn't make a claim you can't prove would you ?

Or would it more feasible to assume he just left out the words "within our cities"....and its just a common gaff ?

You're not very good at math. The peak rates were in the '90's. But even if the rates were higher in the '90's (which they were - and it's even on that Politifact page you went to), that's all we need to know. We don't need to go back 47 years. Trump said that the rates are higher now than in the past 47 years, so they just have to be lower than they were at any point during that time. And they were almost twice as high in the '90's.

The data I saw only goes up to the end of 2016. I think it's safe to say there wasn't a 3% jump after the rates have hovered around 5/5.5% for the past decade. If they did have that kind of unreal increase, since you want to credit Trump with everything that has happened this year, it's on him...right?

But they haven't, I'm quite sure.

Wait a minute. Is Trump talking about the murder rate generally or the murder rate in urban areas?

I guess whatever works best for protecting and defending him, as you have sworn to do.

If I knew, I wouldn't be asking you...I'm not making any claims, you are.

..whats your HONEST opinion, if you could manage an HONEST opinion ?

You've been defending him this whole thread, and you don't know?

I suppose I assumed Trump had his facts wrong because you were going on about it lol?

I'm now open to the possibility he misspoke. Surprise me and concede he may have committed a gaffe.

Darth - if this was the only tall tale he told, I'd say it could be a gaffe. But it's been a pattern for a year and a half of his life as a politician, and really for his whole career, and something he even wrote about as a strategy in one of his books.

So, no - I don't think this was a gaffe. This is what Trump does. It's strange that you're just getting to know this aspect of him.

I didn't think you could lol.

You've descended to hackery, Thing.

Leaving out the words "within our cities", as he did say at other times sounds like he's talking about the murder rate generally.....especially if

into 'gotchas' like thingy is.....Trump, nor any in his entire administration. will get the benefit of the doubt with pinheads or the press like democrats do....

what would the trolls do if that happened.....?

I'm still not sure that it would be accurate even if you said "within our cities" as part of the statistic. I also want to see the 2016 numbers... The FBI usually puts out the report for the preceding year in September. I just wish he wouldn't draw attention to the argument negatively like this. The murder rates in cities like Chicago are horrific enough without giving others a statistical accuracy argument that can be twisted.

Trump is doing a bad job getting the message out, because he isn't careful to avoid obvious arguments the other side may bring. If you can get people talking about statistics it takes the humanity from the discussion and leaves you arguing "but he meant cities"... rather than talking about 100s of murders every month of actual people in those cities.

Hey, you like to use the ol' 57 states thing w/ Obama all the time. Why can't that be a gaffe? Why can't we assume he was also talking about the states plus territories like Guam, DC, Virgin Islands, etc.?

Oh, that's right - he's a Democrat.
