Perception is important: Trump does not look like the kind of guy who will bend towards Iran or anyone else," said Abdulrahman al-Rashed, a veteran Saudi commentator.

"If he behaves as he says, then we will see another Ronald Reagan, someone all the forces in the region will take seriously. That's what we have missed in the past eight years, unfortunately."

They see in Trump a strong president who will shore up Washington's role as their main strategic partner in a region central to U.S. security and energy interests.

In Gulf Arab eyes, that involves above all checking what they see as a surge of Iranian support for paramilitary allies in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon and for fellow Shi'ite Muslims in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia's oil-producing Eastern Province.

Trump speaks with Egyptian president el-Sissi

President Trump spoke by phone to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on Monday, according to the White House.

El-Sissi has praised Trump in the past. In late December, the Egyptian leader reportedly stalled a United Nations Security Council vote on a now-infamous resolution against Israel at Trump's personal request, a move that rankled supporters of former President Obama.

Its telling that the Arab states love Trump, considering how they rule their own land.

The only problem with this is Trump is America first, does he plan to help these countries or will they be on their own?

They don't kill them for being Catholic. Plus, you would strongly support the way they treat women and gays.

They don't? How did they conquer Constantinople?

What is your basis for judging me on how I would support their treatment of women and gays?

What they did in Constantinople was a long time ago, using that standard Christians kill Jews, because you know Crusades's.

You're funny for thinking that Islam's stated goal has an expiration date, and that they are not advancing it rather successfully in Europe at the present time.

Do Christians stated goal from the 1500's have an expiration date?

Part of why I posted the link was to counter the 'everybody hates Trump-the world hates Trump' *misperception*. The world, outside of the Beltway, Hollywood and domestic urban precincts, is a pretty complex place.

Obama approached it with a sort of naïveté that boiled down to---'let's just make them like us'. Hence, the apologies for our past sins---some real and some perceived.

In the Arab world, or in most of the world besides Western Europe for that matter, such an attitude is perceived as weakness. The Gulf Arab leaders believe Trump is a strong man that will bring some much needed stability back to their region.

How that squares with Trump's America First common sense pragmatism [I resist calling it an ideology] is a different question.

^ gonna have to see his foreign policy -he's realistic that we cannot deal with Iran.
Just how he plans to deal with the Sunni states is up in the air -but he's warming up to Egypt ( el-Sisi)
