When Speaker Pelosi lost her speakership, the Republican party was in such disarray they couldn't get it together enough to find a Republican that:
a) Was acceptable to a sufficient to win the vote to take the post, &
b) was willing to fill the post.
BUT !!
There was ONE man, Mitt Romney's former VP running mate, that had more than enough approval. The position was his in a walk, if he'd accept it.
Ryan didn't want it.
BUT !!
There was quite a bit of political arm-twisting. The pot was sweetened considerably, and Ryan was assured that he would be given the leeway he required to hold the position.
Ryan eventually accepted, and has been very impressive in the post ever since.
I highly recommend today's CBS broadcast interview of Speaker Ryan, an excellent man doing a very difficult job about as well as it can be done.
