NFL TV Ratings Continue To Dive.

1) election year
2) oversaturizarion
3) stars missing/hurt
4) Kap's antics

Not suggesting they are in that order just saying all four playing a role
You don't think the CTE issue is playing a role?

I have to admit since becoming aware of how prevalent CTE is among former college and pro football players it has changed my view of the sport dramatically. Though to be honest I've always been more of a baseball fan than a football fan.

That's pretty harsh. I know the incident you're talking about and the umpire who made the bad call has personally apologized to the pitcher for his mistake. I also understand MBL's position on not wanting to open a can of worms by reversing a call ex post facto.

Having said that MLB is....bar none...the greatest team sport in the world and if the NFL declines due to the CTE issue...and it doesn't take a Nostradamus to predict that it will...then you'll probably see a resurgence in fan devotion to MLB...not that it's actually gone away.
It could be argued that replay rules were borne out of that blown call.

As far as a team effort, I don't think Baseball is the ultimate team game. Basketball probably trumps it based solely on the fact that 5 allstars can't win unless they play as a team.

A star pitcher can single handedly keep the opposition in check for the whole game.

I don't see the masses coming back to baseball. Too slow moving and boring at times. Women tune in to NFL more than they do baseball.

For now....but lots of people now that they know the long term consequences of repetitive brain injuries and CTE are declining to permit their children to participate in Football.

When I was born Football was the third most popular sport in the nation. Baseball was number 1 and boxing was number 2. Boxing began a very steep decline because of many fighters who ended up punchy (pugilistica dementia) which we know call CTE. Now it is pretty much off the radar except for a handful of big fights each year.

The truth is, and the NFL knows this and it scares the shit out of them, if enough Mom's decide the long term risk of brain injury is to great to allow their sons to play football then the NFL is toast. It's just a matter of time.

Knowing what I know now about CTE and it's cause and how the NFL and College Football hid the scope of the problem I would not permit my children to play tackle football unless my goal was to raise mouth breathers like PR and ILA.
Valid point. If we lose the impetus by youth, the future cannot be good.

The NFL evolved into a fast moving, much more violent game. Players were taught at a young age to use their helmet as a weapon.

With the changes to the rules, I think there's a chance that it will survive, but you make a great point about kids.

Change has to start with the pee wee leagues.

Playing on carpet covered concrete wasn't the smartest move either.

People watch sports to escape this bullshit. Kaepernick has a job. He should do his job. If I were his employer I would tell him to do this shit on his own time.

But if the NFL doesn't mind losing business them fuck em
How did you feel about Tebow selling Jesus every Sunday on the field?

Sorry....you're just simply wrong.

By any objective measure Baseball is the greatest team sport in the entire world based on the objective of the game.

In basketball the objective of the game is for one team to advance the ball to the net and put the ball through the net to score two points.

Where as in baseball the objective of the game is to go home...and be safe.

So sorry...basketball doesn't even remotely compare to baseball in greatness.

The great philosopher George Carlin explains why Baseball is great, and in particular, greater than football.

I had mixed emotions about that.

But if the NFL wants their ratings back they should get rid of Colin and find some more Tebow's.
...and replace their lineman with big ole monster trucks and serve lots and lots of Budweiser too!

Face the facts. Football is declining because of peoples concerns over repetitive brain injuries and violence. The vast majority of people could give a shit less about either Kapernick or Tebow. The NFL isn't doing itself any favors by making the cost of the game so prohibitive that the average joe can't afford to take his kids to the game.

I KNOW you aren't arguing that baseball is any better?

As for your post about the concept of the two sports...that's poetic for sure, but in actuality, baseball is perceived as boring to all but the most loyal fans. Sure...we can appreciate a 1-0 pitcher's duel, but most people will tune out. Casual fans, which you need to be successful, want a fast moving game, with a lot of scoring. Soccer will never compete in this country. It has the speed, but very little 'success' w/respect to scoring.

If that were true you'd see a corresponding drop in HS and college viewership. Is there? I don't know.

I think Kap has been a factor but the NFL down plays it. The NFL has been a conflicted paradox of toxic masculinity and slavish devotion to political correctness for some time now.

Kap attracts racists that would never watch football. Of course, they might switch channels right after the anthem.

Is there any citation for people who refuse to watch because of Kaepernick?

To make sure I understand your point you're saying the decline in NFL viewership has nothing at all to do with Kap's protests?

Whenever you have a multi billion dollar industry, sponsors tend to hold the reins. When you have idiots on video beating the crap out of women, you have to act quickly before the backlash ensues.

Pretty much what I've been saying

But although they might experience the same downturns, both the NBA and NFL have far higher ratings and reach than MLB. The weakest NFL market, the Oakland Raiders, had a higher average rating (10.9) than some of baseball’s strongest local markets.
The NBA, meanwhile, is making huge inroads abroad (especially in China), making $350 million internationally in 2014 and have grown at an annual rate of 18 percent.
Even one of baseball’s most lucrative markets, New York, has struggled lately to maintain interest in its teams.
How can MLB fix all of this? Some say speeding up the game could revamp interest in the sport, and others suggest rekindling the explosive offense of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s by lowering the pitcher’s mound. During this year’s spring training games, MLB has been experimenting with a clock meant to limit the time between
innings.http://businessjournalism.org/2015/04/sports-and-money-poor-tv-ratings-are-hurting-baseball/

Did I mumble?

Get back to me in December, when the races tighten.

What are baseball's numbers in May?

Bro, football is not baseball. Football is the not the number one sport because people don't tune in to end of the year to watch. TV doesn't pay multiple billions to air it because people tune in at the end of the year. You are completely misunderstanding the econonics of the sport

Oh yeah, throw in the domestic violence issue that is turning some off. Josh Brown being the latest

Absolutely I am. I just proved it based on objective metrics. Baseball is simply the best team sport in the world because it has the best objective of any team sport in the world.

Not to mention nothing comes even close in all of sports to the difficulty of hitting major league pitching. You're like Tom...you just don't know greatness is sport if you don't recognize baseball for what it is, the greatest team sport in the world.

Look....if Bob Costas can't scare off viewers with his years of histrionics and political editorializing during sporting events than Kap sure as hell isn't going to have an impact. You know whens the last time I thought about Kap or Tebow the last time I saw a game football game? Never!

Maybe it's all the talk down there in the holler but up here no one really gives a shit come kick off.
