If she has a 1600+ plus rating withough years of study -which apparently is the fact- she is much the same.

If you've never studied chess, it's hard work. You gotta learn some openings, and variants -then you gotta learn the latest variations (etc.)
( which will be played against you), as well as the enormous concentration it takes. End games and midgames are separate studies.

To be able to skip past a lot of this as a "natural" just doesn't happen all that often

End games were my weak points. Learning openings and mid game strategies and their variants I became decent at by studying but extrapolating those to the end game positions I sucked at. Some people have an intuitive talent for that. I don't and it seriously limited my game.

To those of you who win at pickup chess games consistently in the mid game and think you're hot. You suck at chess but just don't know it. It's all about your positition at the end game.

endgames take a lot of counting moves, and I lose interest too. But it's what it takes to win.

Computers changed everything. I learned old school - my first games were in the early '60 -and I learned descriptive notation
( P-K4- P-QB4), and it's still how I have to visualize. d4-d5 have no visual meaning for me.

I havent' played in over 2 years. I was thinking about doing a few online games ,but I'm just so rusty.

That's about where I ranked in my last tournament. Though better than the average person at competitive chess I sucked at the visualization aspect. I was like Spock who couldn't understand why with his superior numbers and pattern recognition skills could not beat Capt. Kirk in chess. It was because Kirk was an innate genius at visualization.

I have a beautiful chess board that a close friend of mine, who is a cabinet maker by trade, made for me. It's made of curly maple and walnut. I have it set up in my den but have been too cheap to buy a chess set worthy of it.

I actually prefer algebraic notation and most computer chess games are set up for that.

I like to play the occasional pick up game but chess can become an unhealthy obsession that occupies far to much of your time like video games can. Having said that, chess is the ultimate thinking persons game.

I've got a nice board to0 (birch and walnut it think) - 2 1/4" squares with a border (regulation for tourneys).

Pickup a set of wooden Staunton style pieces, and you have a nice looking approved board for tourney play

I just checked out Stuantons web site. I had no idea of the value of the chess board my friend made for me. A comparable board from Staunton is $1500. I thought it was like $200 to $300.

Fisher is often compared to Paul Morphy considered by many one of the greatest chess masters ever. He dominated the world for a short time then went back home to New Orleans where he lived out his life as a local eccentric.

Staunton is style of pieces ( although it might be a web domain too) - as you know chess pieces can get pretty wild.
So for tourney play they are restricted to plain "Staunton style" pieces ( as not to be confusing for players) -they are standard

That sounds like a nice board. My uncle made me mine -he was a woodworker when I was a kid. It's beautiful
but I played a lot of games over it, and we were pretty drunk at times, so they are some blemishes.

a good set of plain Staunton style pieces shouldn't cost you too much -find a wood tone you like for your board.
The plainer style pieces won't detract from the beauty of your board ,and using Staunton Style mean you have a regulation chess set

Oh I know what you mean. One is at their most vulnerable when ones entire energy and thought is concentrated on solving a problem.

I have had more than one losing opponent do, what we call in the vernacular of my favorite sport of cycling, "the Huffy toss", when losing unexpectedly.
