If Hillary Clinton Wins, Foundation Will Stop Accepting Foreign Donations

Facing criticism for some of the donations given to his family’s philanthropy, Bill Clinton said on Thursday that the Clinton Foundation would no longer accept foreign or corporate money and that he would resign from its board should Hillary Clinton win the presidency.

Mr. Clinton’s announcement, which he relayed to foundation employees in a meeting on Thursday, followed the recent release of State Department emails mentioning donors to the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation who had contact with aides to Mrs. Clinton while she was the secretary of state.

The donations have become a lighting rod in Mrs. Clinton’s campaign against Donald J. Trump, who has repeatedly implied that foreign donors had corrupted his opponent’s tenure as secretary of state. On Tuesday, the Trump campaign pointed to an editorial in The Boston Globe titled “Clinton Foundation Should Stop Accepting Funds.”

The moves come amid concern among some Clinton allies that additional details could emerge about relationships between Mrs. Clinton’s State Department and foundation donors.

Mr. Trump has already talked of a 2009 series of emails that showed Douglas J. Band, a chief adviser to Mr. Clinton, seeking to arrange a meeting between a senior American government official and Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese-Nigerian developer and foundation donor.

“As you know, he’s key guy there and to us and is loved in Lebanon
,” Mr. Band wrote in a message obtained by Judicial Watch, a conservative advocacy group, through public records lawsuits.

Mr. Trump said the exchange proved a “pay-to-play” relationship between donors and Mrs. Clinton’s State Department. The Clinton campaign said that its rivals had mischaracterized the exchange and that Mrs. Clinton never took action because of donations to the foundation.

But the email releases, and the potential for real or perceived conflicts of interest, have forced the Clintons to protect against further damage to her already low levels of trust among voters.

The former president also said on Thursday that whether Mrs. Clinton wins or loses, the Clinton Foundation would end the Clinton Global Initiative, an annual gathering of global leaders, philanthropists, donors and celebrities to discuss topics of international concern. It will hold its final gathering in September.

Foreign nationals and countries are prohibited from donating directly to American political campaigns, but have given hundreds of millions of dollars to the Clinton Foundation, which works globally to combat AIDS/H.I.V., malaria, childhood obesity and climate change, and promotes women’s rights and other causes.

Last year, under pressure for its dealings with donors outside the United States, the Clinton Foundation said it would curb new contributions from foreign governments, but it did not discontinue fund-raising from foreign individuals, corporations or charities.

Mr. Clinton’s decisions were first reported Thursday by The Associated Press and were confirmed by Craig Minassian, a foundation spokesman. The charity will rely only on contributions from American citizens and charities should Mrs. Clinton become president, Mr. Clinton explained.

But the new provision will not necessarily ease concerns about how the foundation and its supporters would be dealt with by a Hillary Clinton Administration.

An ABC News report in June about the appointment of Rajiv K. Fernando, a Chicago-based securities trader and major foundation donor, to a sensitive State Department intelligence board in 2011 prompted a backlash by Mrs. Clinton’s political rivals. “How the Clinton Foundation Put National Security Up for Sale,” read the subject of a Republican National Committee news release.

Mrs. Clinton has improved her trust ratings recently, but 59 percent of Americans still say she is not honest and trustworthy, compared with 62 percent who say the same about Mr. Trump, according to an ABC News / Washington Post poll this month.

In recent years, the Clintons’ daughter, Chelsea, has taken on a leadership role at the foundation. Mr. Clinton had initially hoped to continue doing the same, even if he were back in the White House.

“I hope I’ll get permission to keep this foundation going,” he told Queen Latifah on her talk show in 2014, amid a packed schedule of foundation-related events, including an overseas trip with donors.

So they finally stopped foreign governments from donations...how in the hell did they ever let that happen?
But they still allow foreign Big Donors individuals to do so.

They need to shut it down completely. They've gotten rich off their connections already -

They should have closed the shakedown when she became secretary of state.

she was supposed to have a wall of separation. no involvement at all...except her minions ( aides) did that for her..
Obama made her sign it as part of her appointment to Sec. of State

Huma Abedin was employed by 4 entities at one time while in the State Dept.
There are these things/programs ( I have to look up the term) for multi-talented peeps
but they are for professionals, not for politicians, and their cronies.

So she'd claim she was doing this and that under such and such auspice

Don't think the lefties have been given their talking points and marching orders on this one. It must be exhausting for Crooked Hillary supporters. I mean look at KKKhristiefan. Bless her little heart going all Deshtard starting thread after thread of anti Trump bullshit. Does she really think she is changing anyone's mind? Dumb twat.

So is the problem with foreign donations to the foundation only, or to all foreign donations?

foreign donors to campaigns are illegal. But the foundation has allowed not just foreign donors -but foreign gov'ts to donate.
Apparently they stopped the foreign gov'ts last year, but the Big Donor access went on.

They need to shut all that down

I don't know why this isn't getting more press, then.

"Donald Trump's campaign is still soliciting illegal donations from foreign individuals — including members of foreign governments at their official email addresses — weeks after the campaign was put on notice by watchdog groups.

Foreign members of parliament from the United Kingdom and Australia confirmed to The Hill that they received fundraising solicitations from the Trump campaign as recently as July 12 — two weeks after a widely publicized Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint issued on June 29 by nonpartisan watchdogs Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center.

Federal law on foreign money in campaigns is black and white, campaign finance lawyers on both sides of the political divide say. It's illegal for foreign individuals, corporations and governments to either give money directly to U.S. candidates or spend on advertising to influence U.S. elections. And it's also illegal for candidates to solicit foreign money, regardless of whether the donations ever materialize. There is now vast documentary evidence that the Trump campaign is continuing to do just that."

^ the date says 7/12. Is it still happening? There's no excuse for doing it, and it looks like a FEC complaint was made.
But I haven't seen anything more recent to suggest it's still going on, or is systemic.

It's still happening. This is from today.

Despite several warnings and a criminal complaint, Donald Trump's presidential campaign continues to ask for donations from foreign nationals.

In June of this year, complaints were filed with the Federal Election Committee (FEC) by the Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21 against Trump after it became public that he had been asking for campaign contributions from members of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

UK Parliament Members Peter Bottomley and Bob Blackman both said that they'd received numerous fundraising appeals on the Republican nominee's behalf.

It is illegal for foreign individuals, corporations or governments to give money directly to U.S. candidates or to spend on advertising to influence U.S. elections, and so, obviously, it is also illegal for U.S. candidates to solicit foreign money.

Trump campaign illegally soliciting donations from foreign nationals

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is illegally soliciting campaign donations from foreign nationals, according to a complaint being filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission.
Mr. Trump’s campaign has emailed solicitations to foreign nationals in Iceland, Scotland, Britain, and Australia requesting that they make contributions to his presidential campaign, according to a copy of the complaint being filed by the Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21, two campaign finance watchdog groups.
“Donald Trump should have known better,” said Paul S. Ryan, deputy executive director of the Campaign Legal Center.
“It is a no-brainer that it violates the law to send fundraising emails to members of a foreign government on their official foreign government email accounts, and yet, that’s exactly what Trump has done repeatedly,” Mr. Ryan said.
The complaint cites news reports of politicians in Iceland, Scotland, and Australia receiving the solicitations via email.
