Interesting no threads here about the death of Prince

Yup. And recycled time and again with various top tier guitarists.
Please note that Prince didn't make Rolling Stones original top 100. Did magage 33 on a later one after one of his resurfacings.
Well "the greatest" thing is an illusion but there is no at arguing he was great.

Those RS guitar rankings always make me laugh. They're so concerned w/ being "hip." I remember that they had Kurt Cobain on one at #7, and Lindsey Buckingham wasn't even top 100.

Nothing against Cobain at all, but I think he would have been embarrassed about that. Any list that doesn't have Prince in the top 10 lacks credibility, imo.

Greatest is purely subjective of course.
Great is as well.
He was a great performer certainly, had a real presence on stage.
As a guitarist, for me, only ok. More of a musician than technically good.

i think in America we have. Bizarre habit of making rankings. What we can all agree upon was this dude was really, really good.

RS loved cobain. He wasn't there for technical profiency but rather expanding the music. I don't share their view but I understand it.

You clearly are a fan and not alone. He sold a lot of records. The wonderful thing about music is there is literally something for everyone.

Prince was a prodigy and a genius. They come along every once in a while and shake up the established order of life and cause upheavals and revolutions in the given order of things as Prince did in music. All us mere mortals can do is stand back in awe and astonishment and appreciate what they do.

The brightest flames usually burn out first. We're lucky Prince's talent burned as brightly as it did for as long as it did.

My only complaint was I never got to see him perform live.

Mere mortals? In awe? No thanks.

You should be thankful you didn't waste your money.

It is a amazing how many songs he wrote for other people, I knew about Sinead O'Connor but that's about it. Yes, Mott I know you know!!

[h=1]'Prince is famous for ghostwriting': 14 songs you didn't know Prince penned and gave away to other artists[/h]

Prince also wrote Just Another Manic Monday a huge hit for the Bangles .

i would have to add Gary Moore, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Les Paul, Rory Gallagher, Ry Cooder, Frank Zappa and Joe Bonamassa. Oh and of course the numero uno Carlos Santana.

I'm not quite old enough to fully appreciate Les Paul's impact, just a little before my time but he's well documented. Really like Bonamassa but maybe he's just a little too young to see where he fits in but terrific technally. Moore, Vaughn, Gallagher kinda slide in with Gilmore, Knophler, and a boatload of others for me. People love Cooper but I never quite got in there with him.
Carlos is always hard for me. He's a true musician (not j u st technically sound) but I just don't like his stuff aesthetically. Beck (Jeff) is technically brilliant but not the musician Clapton is. I like Pages the best of the Yard birds trio because of his broad range of styles. All his session work gave him advantages few get.
And the one guy I have the most trouble with is Hendrix. He certainly took guitar places it had never been but his execution was flawed (drugs I guess) so we never knew just what he might have been.
Been revisiting Ritchey Blackmore lately and boy is he good.
I could go on forever but I'll stfu now.

In an interview here in Columbus a local reporter asked guitar legend Eric Clapton (who owns a home here) "What does it feel like to be the worlds greatest living guitarist?". Clapton replied. "I don't know....ask Prince.".

Who cares? All entertainers are useless people with lives of no value. Being a great guitarist is like being one of those idiots who can keep 20 plates spinning on poles.
