Richest 62 People Control Same Wealth as Poorest Half of World's Population

You asked what I suggested for a solution. That's what I offered. Groups like the Gates Foundation can still do great work but if we want to make big fundamental changes it has to start with the government structures of these countries.

Just trying to understand if we are on the same page or not here. Do you agree or disagree with what I said above and have been saying?

Thank you Obama!
Thank you QE!
Thank you ZIRP!

Give away 85 billion a month to the gentry class year after year and amazingly the rich get richer. What a friend they have in BO.
Yes that's billion with a B and every month not year.
Is it any wonder why a junior senator from Illinois was second in political donations from fanny and huge money from the rest of wall street ? Bought and paid for.

I don't think all third world countries have corrupt governments. I also think people in third world countries have immediate needs that can't wait for trickle-down government actions.

Millions need immediate help. But if your argument based on the OP is to make fundamental changes it has to start at the governement levels.

I read the article several times and government wasn't mentioned but certainly it plays a part in the lives of its citizens.

The article is just giving the stats, it's not getting into the reasons or potential solutions. Maybe I read the Economist too much but they unfortunately have plenty of articles of governments subjugating and stealing from its citizens.

And this isn't an anti govt screed. It's about the need for good government for many people

A better fettered capitalism would serve this country well.

we really need to take the money out of the election system.

republicans just cant stand that idea.

Mass amounts of money and cheating voters out of their rights is the only way they can gain power in this country

Dear evince:

Capitalism doesn’t fetter particularly well. While an economy is expanding, some concessions can be made to the working class; but when economies contract, those must be removed. Remember the role played by competition in Capitalism. Any innovation one business makes will be countered by an equivalent move in competing businesses. And businesses that do not turn a profit for investors have no future. Deregulation is an economic imperative.

Why do we need to take money out of our electoral system? Europeans may be astonished to learn this, but in the US, gerrymandering is as rampant as it is legal. After all, elections work so much better when politicians get to pick voters.

Moreover, how do you take money out of the election system when the ownership/investment/banking class essentially controls the money supply? Sure, you can limit campaign contributions. But what happens when the financial class decides to stop serving the state’s fiscal needs? Moreover if you can’t trade money for favors openly, imagine how money would be traded illicitly! Again, high profile politicians are also key business figures. [Vice?]President Cheney was CEO of Halliburton, a firm made vast amounts of money from the war. Do the hats really change that easily? And the wealthy are known to finance the campaigns of both parties to ensure that anyone elected will be beholden to them.

I submit that the issue is not that Republicans or Democrats scam elections but that elections themselves are a scam. If so, the only way people can gain power in this country … is to -- what … abandon a system that has abandoned them, perhaps?
