Richest 62 People Control Same Wealth as Poorest Half of World's Population

What is the benefit of putting a cap on what one can accomplish (financially)? Because that's essentially the argument here.

The other big issue is the corrupt governments around the world that keep their people poor. How much more involvement in those countries should the world have?

There's nothing about a cap in any of the articles I read on this. I don't like to think of any society being a plutocracy, though.

That's not really the point though, many societies are dog eat dog and could hardly be described as meritocratic.

Yes, but America's development of the gentry class separated it from traditional aristocracy early on. Eventually, we did breed an inherited class from the gentry, such as the Rockefellers, and, presently, you can see Paris Hilton screwing around. Nevertheless, we have no birthright honours or rights to be an aristocrat. One has to buy off lawyers, politicians, journalists, etc., in order to come close to it. Nothing is perfect.

Dear christiefan915:

What I'd like to know is ... how much of this billionaire prosperity is underwritten by huge, government bailouts of fiscal institutions and near-zero interest rates from Federal Reserve INC. I'd also like to know at what rate the wealth of the ber-wealthy is increasing. Someone wrote somewhere at the current rate of upward capital flow, the ownership/finance/banking class would control the total world wealth by what -- some 35 [give or take a few years].

IMT

Has Bill Gates been a net positive or negative to the world?

If you're referring to his foundation, of course a positive. He's using the money globally "to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty..." and that's commendable. Bill Gates is only one person. How many of the other 62 are doing what he's doing? My opinion is that it would be better for impoverished societies if more money was in them at the grass roots level such as higher wages and better access to products and services. I get solicitations to help people in third world countries by buying them a farm animal, buying their goods or helping support their children. IMO it would be better to have entire villages' standards of living raised directly rather than depending on the generosity of those on mailing lists.

Btw, did you know Gates partnered with the Clintons? Those woman-hating Clintons? :D

I would like to know specifics also. The trend is scary.

A better fettered capitalism would serve this country well.

we really need to take the money out of the election system.

republicans just cant stand that idea.

Mass amounts of money and cheating voters out of their rights is the only way they can gain power in this country

Impoverished countries need government reform. I know you've argued the U.S. should stay out of other countries business. Corrupt and authoritative governments keep their people poor. This goes far beyond 'we should raise workers wages'.

Still doesn't mean you can't give a handout directly even if the government is corrupt.

If you are referring to his company he has still been a net positive in the world.

1) who's going to give that handout?

2) that does nothing to fundamentally change what you are complaing about in the OP

It could be done the same way medical care is done, when doctors come to a village and open a clinic. People can come to a distribution center, state their needs and get a voucher or something.

What is your solution? Or do you not think this is a problem?

That's like giving a bandaid to to someone who's bleeding to death.

To your second question huh??? Have you not read anything I've said? Of course there's a problem and it starts at the top. Corrupt governments that steal from its citizens and purposefully don't give them the resources needed for just basic survival are at the top of the list for why we have the disparity in the world. How many billions have charities, the IMF and the World Bank sent to countries that never reaches the people and aren't inverted properly?

It's what we do here for people in need. Food and housing vouchers, etc.

Then what good is any philanthropic organization like the Gates Foundation?

You asked what I suggested for a solution. That's what I offered. Groups like the Gates Foundation can still do great work but if we want to make big fundamental changes it has to start with the government structures of these countries.
