5 things you need to know about ... Mexican drug lord 'El Chapo' Guzman

There's bi-partisan appeal to reduce our drug war but especially calls for it from the left. Should we be increasing our drug war budget and expanding it further?

Does one have to be a Muslim hater to be concerned over what's happening in the Middle East? If deaths or violence are a concern aren't more people dying and hurt in Syria than by El Chapo?

No, one doesn't have to be a Muslim hater to be concerned about the ME. I've said it before, you can love or hate multiple things at the same time, and don't understand the all or nothing approach that we see here often enough.

I am critical of the Muslim haters who fear-monger though. The people who see creeping Shari'ah around every corner and say that we'll be forced to submit to Islam if we allow Muslims into the country. People who believe all Muslims are terrorist sleeper cells lying in wait to take over the U.S. You know these people are out there, just listen to Trump or read the odious Pam Geller's blog as examples.

I think drug lords like Guzman have done a lot more damage to the U.S. and Mexico than any Muslim attack. They're not making us swear allegiance to Allah but they have contributed to the addictions of millions, IOW making desperate users lie, cheat and kill over a product. I don't have a solution. Are we supposed to drone Mexico? Invade it? I don't know that increasing the drug war budget is getting to the source of the problem.

I'm still wondering why I "need" to know anything about El Shorty... Why should I care about El Shortstuff?

Why should you care about a guy who's responsible for the deaths of at least 70,000 people and who's sole purpose is to keep people enslaved to drugs?

I can't figure it out either, Damocles.

The U.S. has spent billions on the drug war in Mexico and Central America. Ask the black community in America what they think of the drug war.

Drug use, like prostitution, has basically been around as long as man has. As you stated there's clearly no easy answer. I don't think legalizing all drugs is a good thing but it is one way to take away the power of the cartels and people like El Chapo. Would you like to see that?

You can step-up your fight with the cartels while simultaneously cutting off their revenue stream by locally ending prohibition. Then just see to it that the leaders are captured by the entities who hate them the most for maximum bad karma.
That sounds good on its face but thinking it through, no matter what we do with ending or not ending prohibition, the cartels can under any price set in the US and continue selling.

The US cannot fight cartels in another country....we have no right to interfere in Mexico unless we are asked to act in that country.

And what did you think the US rights are meddle in the affairs of Mexico and THEIR drug cartels ? Mexico didn't ask us for assistance....the murders their are their problem, not ours.

The Islamic barbarians are at war with the US....they are attacking US citizens,....here and abroad..so we will and have to fight them, preferably on their own turf....as many countries
are doing, not only the US.

What damage has Guzman directly done to the US?....addictions ?....you're joking...its you lefties want to make drugs legal, tax them and make money....
The Democrats certainly aren't worried about addictions......you think make drugs legal with cut down on addictions....

Jeebus. Americans have been attacked by drug cartels, bravs. You justify meddling in the ME when there are big problems closer to home. And IMO we shouldn't be meddling in any country's internal affairs.

Cartels versus ISIL

"A recent United Nations report estimated nearly 9,000 civilians have been killed and 17,386 wounded in Iraq in 2014, more than half since ISIL fighters seized large parts on northern Iraq in June. It is likely that the group is responsible another several thousand deaths in Syria. To be sure, these numbers are staggering. But in 2013 drug cartels murdered more than 16,000 people in Mexico alone, and another 60,000 from 2006 to 2012 — a rate of more than one killing every half hour for the last seven years. What is worse, these are estimates from the Mexican government, which is known to deflate the actual death toll by about 50 percent.

Statistics alone do not convey the depravity and threat of the cartels. They carry out hundreds of beheadings every year. In addition to decapitations, the cartels are known to dismember and otherwise mutilate the corpses of their victims — displaying piles of bodies prominently in towns to terrorize the public into compliance. They routinely target women and children to further intimidate communities. Like ISIL, the cartels use social media to post graphic images of their atrocious crimes...

...U.S. media have especially hyped ISIL’s violence against Americans. This summer ISIL beheaded two Americans and has warned about executing a third; additionally, one U.S. Marine has died in efforts to combat the group. By contrast, the cartels killed 293 Americans in Mexico from 2007 to 2010 and have repeatedly attacked U.S. consulates in Mexico. While ISIL’s beheadings are no doubt outrageous, the cartels tortured, dismembered and then cooked one of the Americans they captured — possibly eating him or feeding him to dogs...

...The cartels’ atrocities are not restricted to the Mexican side of the border. From 2006 to 2010 as many as 5,700 Americans were killed in the U.S. by cartel-fueled drug violence. By contrast, 2,937 people were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Over the last decade, some 2,349 Americans were killed in Afghanistan, and 4,487 Americans died in Iraq. In four years the cartels have managed to cause the deaths of more Americans than during 9/11 or either of those wars..."

If we shouldn't meddle in any country's affairs then there's really nothing we can do about El Chapo and his violence right?

Never have, never will. I don't support liberty out of strict self interest.

You substituted your opinion for what I was talking about in the first post, i.e. "Note the number of deaths he's responsible for. Yet Muslim haters will ignore this and instead focus on what's happening in the ME rather than right across our border."

It's about deaths, not drugs or the liberty to use them. The thread went off on several tangents but the point was about how much people focus on Muslim crimes and disregard others.

It's 100% about drugs and the legal/illegal use of them. Why do you not see people killing each other over booze? You'd think you drug warriors would learn from the past but I guess not.

Nope no one ever killed over booze;

How many non Muslim haters are focusing on what's happening in Mexico? I haven't heard Obama or anyone in Congress talk about it. Can't say I've heard any big liberal media voices speak about it either.
