The sub-text is the guy is supposed to be able to rob a store; then threaten someone with physical harm and expect no repercussions.
Shoplifting isn't a capital offense. Why didn't the aggressor just call the cops when he saw what was happening?

Moral of the story: shoplifting beer in Tucson is a capital crime.
I'm right here dude. You can talk directly to me.
So following a thief is now 'stalking'? And this thief gets shot because he attacks someone with a board but he's the victim? Ok Zap.
No. Attacking someone with a board can get you shot.
We will never know all the details, will we?
Maybe the purported thief (NO trial/NO conviction) felt threatened by the people following him and turned to defend himself...gun nuts certainly had no problem going that route when it was your hero George Zimmerman gunning down someone he felt threatened him.
These people could have called the cops. I don't know why that's so hard for people to understand.
Once I was in a department store Christmas shopping and noticed a young woman stuffing gloves and scarves into a bag. So I told the clerk and she immediately called store security and they grabbed the woman before she could leave the store. There's zero reason people should take the law into their own hands over shoplifting.

The story doesn't say if the cops were called or not. Following the guy to identify to the police isn't taking the law into your own hands.
Pulling a gun on him is.

The guy attacked him with a log. If the shooter pulled a gun first on the guy and just shot him then I would totally agree with you. But when the guy attacks you first...
Would be great if video cameras at the Burger King caught this action to see how it really went down.

The vigilante could have pulled his gun and threatened the guy with it. He wasn't attacked with the piece of wood.
