Oklahoma Executions

So locking them in a cage for the rest of their lives is not barbaric?

Sure, but society's welfare has to be considered. What are you going to do with them? The whole freaking subject is barbaric. Why do people have to do things like this in the first place? What are you supposed to do with someone who will bury a young woman alive, or rape and murder an infant? How can we ever solve that?

We all know since the advent of DNA that quite a number of men have been released, their lives in ruin. How many have been put to death who would have been freed?

Yes, How many? Capital punishment is more than barbaric, it is a total aberration. There is not case in which it is acceptable.

Lifetime incarceration with no possibility of parole.

Well executing the offender is a sure way of making sure that particular individual doesn't do it again. I have no problem with executions for these kinds of crimes as long as the condemned is guilty of the crime and they have received fair and due process of law. For those who are at the low end of the economic ladder or are racial minorities that is often not the case and those people hardly ever have the ability to defend themselves either against the resources of the State or prosecutorial misconduct.

I don't know if you ever saw the movie "The Thin Blue Line" but what bothered the hell out of me in that case was that the Prosecutor involved in the case was using death penalty convictions to advance his career, the matter of innocence or guilt of the accused was hardly a concern at all to this man. He was only concerned about advancing his career. That simply gave me a case of the willies and scared the hell out of me.

I also must reiterate that lethal injection appalls me as the State requires proefessionals who have sworn to protect life to end it and when they don't use these professionals to respect their ethics you end up with these botched executions. Lethal injection should be banned on that basis alone. The idea that it is more humane for the condemned is a sick joke. In reality it's just cleaner white washed version of death that is less offensive to witnesses. For the condemned it makes little to no difference.

I think one can make a fundamental logical argument about the death penalty that two wrongs never make a right and that the death penalty should be abolished on the moral principles that #1. Killing any human being, even a murderer, is wrong and #2. The State should never have the authority to take a human life.

We got rid of capital punishment in 1965, just the fact that there are so many miscarriages of justice is enough to ensure that it will never come back.

You make a lot of great points. Still, in the end, I think the DP needs to be abolished. For so many of the reasons you state, but also because I agree that it's barbaric and poisonous to society. At the same time, when there is clear guilt as there was in the case of the first man who actually died during his botched execution, I find it instinctively offensive and gross to watch people shouting outrage and wringing their hands about the details. I just don't care. A lot of people suffered worse last night, all over the world. And none of them buried a girl alive.

Pretty much all of Western civilization disagrees with that view.

Only because they have been browbeat into submission, once the appeals process is done those men would get a bullet, which is still far better than the victims got. Oh and spare me the race card, guilt has no color

It's interesting how different cultures have different perspectives on the death penaly. A common western view that I share is that it is better that a guilty murderer walk than an innocent person be executed. In discussing this with several Chinese aquantences they firmly believed it was better for society if an innocent person was executed rather to ensure a guilty person did not walk in order to preserve the rule of law.

I tend to agree with you on both scores. I think the death penalty should be abolished on the basis that old testament "eye for an eye" revenge doesn't work but I also agree that I'm not going to lose any sleep cause some asshole who buried a young woman alive was deep sixed in a botched execution.

If you execute an innocent person, the guilty person walks. It's binary. So there is no "executing an innocent person to ensure that a guilty person does not walk."
