Is "Thug" an overused term with racial undertones?

I don't know how middle-aged white males manage in a society like ours. It's gotta be tough.

No, not really... it is kind of easy. But your confusion does display how bad your fantasy world compares to reality. Please... go back to decoding those secret code words for us.

is this your way of admitting the world has gone overly pc?

No. It's my way of saying that the issue is complex and nuanced and requires some degree of thoughfulness and that maybe people should treat it with the thoughfulness it requires and not be so damned reactionary.

LMAO... so sayeth the man who proclaims it racist right out of the gate. NO SIR... NO knee jerk reaction there.

two way street. The professors explanation seemed pretty reasonable. People should have just taken that at face value, looked at the ACTUAL context, and moved forward.

What I said is that calling Richard Sherman (whom we all agree is not a thug) a thug based on that very brief interview is the sort of thing that a racist does. And I stand by that after having had time to fully reflect on it. The mental process that results in slapping the "thug" label (and again, isn't it just so damned coincidental how that particular word was settled upon by the disparate many) on Sherman is one based on stereotypes of young black men.

Agreed. As many people have pointed out, the word thug in and of itself isn't problematic (by the way, the second highest usage of the term in broadcast media -- a distant second, mind you -- is when John Kerry quite appropriately called Bashir Assad a thug). It's how it is used in context. And in the context of Richard Sherman, its used was premised on racial stereotypes of young black men [edit: even if the person doing the labelling isn't a racist didn't intend to invoke the stereotype.]

Which again is complete nonsense. Had a white NFL player done the same thing and people taken it out of context in the same manner... he too would have been labeled a thug. Again... for those that watched it live, I doubt many would have thought 'thug'. For those that watched it the next day... I can see how if taken out of the immediacy and out of context of what had gone on between crabtree and Sherman that Shermans behavior seemed thuggish. He was abrasive, abnoxious, self centered and he attacked a player on the opposing team that he had just beaten... that is enough to be called a thug. Regardless of his skin color. Again... YOU WANT to make it about race. Which is why you hear many on the left now telling us that the word 'thug' is 'code' for the n-word.

(even though the media and most people called Incognito a thug months before... so apparently this is one of those new code words)

But a white player wouldn't have. I know you laughed about the Jimmy Connors/John McEnroe thing, but you know which tennis player has been labelled a thug for on court misbehavior? Serena Williams.

Also, too: LOL at "attacked."

And you're completely missing the point when you try to justify labelling him a thug based on a few seconds interview taken completely out of context.

is it because she is black or because Jimmy and John played decades before and the word is simply more common today?

Seems like a lot of white guys being called thugs... OMG OMG OMG!!!

You are completely missing the point Dung... you are knee jerk reacting and saying it has to be because of his race. You are allowing no other possible explanation other than the one YOU want to believe. You have no ability to step back and see that it is indeed plausible for others to have seen it as such. Because YOU don't want that to be the case. YOU want it to be about race. that says more about you than anyone.

Now we're just going around in circles. You can continue to rationalize people acting on racial stereotypes if you want. I don't really mind. Just so long as you know what you're doing.

and you can continue pretending that is what people are doing because that is how your own racist mind works. Or you can stop projecting your own racism onto others and try and grow.

For all of you getting your knickers in a twist over the word "thug" being used to tar you as a racist, all I can say is you had it coming. You see, you sided with the thought police when they lambasted those who used the word "nigger" or any other word. You gave them fodder.

Now you will say "No, no no. You are crazy. The word "nigger" is not the same as "thug". Well, yeah, but tell that to the thought police.

I told you then, and I tell you now. They will never stop. You give them an inch and they will take a mile. You can never compromise with them. I mean if'n the colored guy says that using the term "thug" makes him feel that way, who are any of you to say he shouldn't? Is it part of your white privilege that gives you the right to tell a black man how he should feel?

Don't say I didn't warn you

for someone that feels the war has been won, she sure does fucking complain a lot. lol.

As I said, the internet is the last battlefield, and it's where all of the white male maladjusts spew their pent up anger in the form of sexist and racist venom. I fight. You guys will lose this last battle as well, eventually, and there will always be little safe rooms like JPP for you to gather...but we'll all know that in real life you continue to tow the line. I see no one has attempted to refute my point about HR culture...it's because we all know the truth.

keep dreaming.
