I hear you on your second sentence. Now I agree with you that words only have the power that we allow them to but the n-word though has a special place in our history (and not a good one) that it's hard to just turn away from (i'm saying this in general, not specifically directed at Paula Deen).

I was watching the Dambusters the other week on TV and I had forgotten that Guy Gibson's dog was called Nigger, because it was jet black. I bet if that was shown in the US the media feeding frenzy would last for weeks. Peter Jackson is planning a new version but the dog will be called Digger for the US version.

I get what you're saying, and in general, agree about the n-word to an extent.
I just think the level of reaction & "outrage" over this incident is so far overblown, and so characteristic of the pc-world we've created. When it comes to racism in America, Paula Deen & whatever she says in private is NOT the problem.

Reminds me of my grandfather where we would cringe when he'd say some things at home yet his actions totally belied his words.
I agree with you that how Paula Deen treats her employees and people she interacts with is far more important than what she says in private.

I think there's a certain amount of media hypocricy here. Like who hasn't used a racial eptithet in their lifetime? Well if you haven't....fuck you nigger!
This is just another example of the media building someone up so they can knock them down. Paula Deen is a white South Carolina girl from Savanah. Is anyone niave enough to think she's never used a racial epithet? Does anyone really care as long as she's not doing it in public or publicly advocating racist views?
I mean they're going to sink her ship cause she said "nigger" 20 years ago? That's just hypocritical as hell.

That's exactly how I feel. I'm no fan of Paula Deen nor do I bear her any animosity but you'd have to be one niave individual and raised in a shoe box to believe she had never used that word in the past. To have her career ruined because she was honest enough to admit that she has used the word in the past is just flat out hypocritical. I mean if she has said "No I never used that word" in the deposition they be calling her a liar....and rightfully so!Let me preface this by saying that I can't stand Paula Deen. I'd rather be in a room line with chalk boards and a dozen long finger nailed gals scratching on them than to hear her grating voice. I watch a lot of Food Network but never watch any of her shows. I like southern cooking but hers is over the top most of the time (anyone ever see the commercial with the Buttertons) and way too rich even for me.
I bet Paula comes out of this ok, even with being fired. I am 47 and growing up where I have I have, I have heard, used and even had pets named what is referred to now as the "n-word." I do not use it now and haven't in several (several being 28+ years...pinpointed because of college where I saw really have offensive it was) years. I would have had to answer "yes" to the same question though. I don't know if in her answer she was indicating the same sort of thing as me but I might assume it could be. You know she had to have heard and probably used that language or word during the time she has lived. Talk about one of those danged if you do and danged if you don't situations.
Whatever, I couldn't help but notice that at the end of the original article the people buying her products and eating at her restaurants seemed to be forgiving...or at least indicating that she wasn't the one they were eating at the restaurant/buying products for. I think about whatshername who served time and is doing ok now. It will be similar, I think. Besides, by the time I'm 60 something I want to be mostly retired.
The lesson here is if your livelihood depends on your public image.....you'd be wise to settle a civil suit out of court.

actually, it is more likely to be an indication of how her brother treats them, since the lawsuit was occasioned by his actions, not hers....she's involved because she's a partner......

Yea it sounds like he's an unapologetic bigot. That he openly calls black employees "nigger" and he makes them use different entrences and bathrooms than other employees. I'm not about to condemn her because her brother is an asshole.
