One must read what isn't being said.
They say that nobody is currently listening to your phone conversation, but that doesn't mean that it isn't stored and accessible should they feel a "need" to listen.
They say that nobody is checking your book list from the library, but that doesn't mean that it isn't readily available if they feel the need, or that they won't do it then get the warrant later if, and only if, they feel the need to incarcerate you.
They say that "I first heard this on the news this Friday", it doesn't mean that the sentence when you remove "on the news" is accurate also. We all first heard it "on the news" that Friday, however that doesn't mean it was the first time any of us heard it at all. Had we heard it through a friend on the preceding Tuesday, the statement that we first heard it "on the news" on Friday would still be accurate, but it doesn't actually answer the question that was asked, "When did you first hear about this?" does it?
