Even Chris Matthews takes a swing at Obama the Weak

The Force is With Me
Chris Matthews Slams Obama’s Lack of Leadership

While it may be just temporary, Chris Matthews, a talking head who has fawned over President Barack Obama like some dewy-eyed school girl, ripped the White House yesterday during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

The cantankerous pundit still made the case for a big government during the nearly 22-minute segment on the show, but he didn’t hide his contempt for President Obama’s very serious leadership failures.

“This President’s responsible for the federal government. He’s responsible even if he didn’t do anything wrong,” said Matthews on the Morning Joe. “He keeps acting like the only problem he’s got — the only real problem he has, viscerally — is the talking points in Benghazi because that gets to Susan Rice, people close to him, and Michelle.”

Matthews said that President Obama needs someone to handle the day-to-day affairs of the White House to deal handle problems like the administration has seen over the last several days. He cited the lack of this leadership as a “real problem.”

“He is in charge of the entire executive branch. He is the boss. He needs a COO, someone who will carry out that authority every minute of the day through the weekend,” he continued. “He doesn’t want to do that. He doesn’t want to be chief executive, because he doesn’t want a chief operating officer. It’s the way he’s run the White House from the beginning — personally — and it’s a real problem. And now he’s getting blamed for things he knows nothing about, because he knows nothing about them because he doesn’t want to know about them. He doesn’t want to run the United States government. And that has been the problem.”

He also noted that President Obama didn’t express any anger about the IRS story during his press conference earlier this week. Instead, Matthews noted, President Obama only got angry when he was discussing Benghazi.

“Why isn’t he angry — really angry — about what happened with the IRS?” Matthews asked. “Look at him [the other day] at that press conference. The only time he got really angry was when it was on Benghazi and the talking points, because that gets to him and his friends. And the problem is he’s chief executive, it comes down to that and everyone of these problems.”

Matthews is also upset about the potential effect of the scandal, which he said is “gonna haunt the Democratic Party and everyone who believes in positive government” next fall.

“This is perfect. It’s gonna help save Mitch McConnell, it’s gonna help Tom Corbett in Pennsylvania, help Cuccinelli,” he lamented. “Anyone who is on that anti-government right that always says the government screws up in the end, they’re out to get you, now has their case for next November.”

And Matthews wasn’t done there. He slammed the excuses that have been given by the White House in the mounting scandals, specifically pointing to the IRS and the Justice Department’s targeting of the Associated Press.

“[T]his is why it’s important to voters, when you go in the voting booth, you only get one vote. You pick Romney or Obama,” he noted. “When you pick Obama, you want to know the steering wheel that you just turned to the left a little bit, you want that to matter. That means you want that president you voted for to run things. That’s the only power you have as a citizen. Pick the person you want to run things, and then they run them.”

“For anybody to run around in Washington and say ‘We don’t run the IRS,’ or ‘We can’t control the Justice Department,’ and ‘I’m recusing myself,’ they say ‘The steering wheel doesn’t control the car anymore.’ The person says ‘I want the person I voted for to be in charge. The only power I have, and you’re telling me I don’t have it?’ Because you don’t have it. And that is going to really bug people, especially people that care about government doing a good job.”

He may still want bigger government, but Matthews is pretty much right about President Obama’s leadership failures. Harry S Truman once said the “buck stops here,” when referring to decisions made by his administration. Clearly, President Obama has failed across the board in accountability and leadership.

I think the backlash on Obama from guys like Matthews (and there are plenty) is so much more because of how idealistic they were about him in the beginning. It feels like a real betrayal; it's much more personal.

On a side note, man, do I love BB King. I was able to see him many years back, and what a show. He can really hold an audience.

I also think Matthews is wrong. Obama did get mad.

I also think that's true of a great many Obama supporters. They were so anxious for a progressive after Bush, that they never noticed that Obama was even further away from being a progressive than Bush was.

I totally agree with you on BB King. He's gotten old .. but he's still BB King. :0)

I like how he went from being Bush's bitch to Obama's bitch, and a constant critic of the right.

I don't think it will last. He is mad because he thinks progressivism is threatened right now. There is a war going on in the minds of lefties like Matthews. Do they continue to protect Obama as they have for the past five years or so they finally throw him under the bus for good.

As I said before, the IRS scandal is what has legs politically. Benghazi is too confusing for low information voters and can be rationalized as petty politics. The AP story is big but doesn't impact voters. The IRS impacts everyone particularly its new found role in health care. That is what scares Matthews.

Will the press defect because their love for Obama wasn't reciprocated? I am doubtful. They will fall back in line. Some already have.

really, the rot in Washington is pretty bad and just how much can one person do when the opposition party is set to block them any way possible or even without the opposition

i would like to see the entire 5## section of the tax code be eliminated

Do you even understand the meaning of opposition party? What should the opposition party do? Acquiesce?

I am sorry, but Chris Matthews is not the dumbest thing in news. Turn on Fox

Thats funny, it seems to me like hes finally agreeing with what Fox and even CNN has been saying for years......Obama is incompetent, to put it simply.

His excuse that hes ignorant of everything that goes on around him so hes not responsible is as lame as you can get....nobody that is truly responsible gets fired and in the case

of the IRS and wire tapping of reporters, someone needs to go to jail....

I fear this is going to be the case. They have so much invested in him.

I'm hearing liberals in the Bay Area lament about Obama's lack of leadership and how it's hurting his administration and preventing what he hopes to accomplish. Now these people aren't going to turn on him and become Republicans but it's the same thing I've seen all along, he's not a leader. He's never really had to lead before.

Some like DQ give him a pass and will blame Republicans in Congress for being a poor leader but that's just partisanship.

They can't blame Bush so blaming Republicans in the House is the next best thing....pinheads will accept that excuse in a heartbeat....

However I find Chris Matthews painful to watch. And he's an ass. Occasionally I really want to hear his guests finish their sentences. Also, his commentaries tend to be simplistic and banal.

No it doesn't. Also, for what purpose did these organizations seek (c)(4) status? To benefit the social good? Damn straight they deserve to be scrutinized.

Obama said “Americans have a right to be angry about it.” They have a right to be angry that it’s considered a scandal to scrutinize groups that are trying to get tax exempt status from the government in their quest to cripple the government.

There are no clear standards for how much political activity a 501(c)(4) group can undertake. Well that’s not completely true—actually there are no standards at all. The tax code clearly says that these organizations must only engage in social welfare work, but since 1959, the IRS has interpreted that as meaning they must be primarily concerned with social welfare.

would you have preferred mittens?

as for giving Obama a pass, have you seen pictures of him before he ran for the senate and compared them with how he looks now?

and how do you expect him to lead through the walls that the repugs have erected in the house and senate

the word compromise is not in the repug lexicon

so where is the room to lead, he has done what he can with regard to appointments and executive orders, but even here the repugs block him when they can

the only thing he can hope for is a friendly off year election in 2014 where he may pick up enough seats to reestablish control of congress or at least the senate

how would you suggest that he lead the nation?

he is already hitting the campaign trail to tout his agenda

it is not that i give him a pass, but i do not see how he can do more than he is doing

as for him never having been a leader before, he has experience leading a team trying to better Chicago streets and solving various urban problems

oh and while he is at it, he has been trying to clean up the mess handed to him when he took office

as for blaming the repugs being 'just partisanship', while i am not in love with the dim agenda, i prefer it head and shoulders above the repug agenda, but i do not give either side a complete zero for some things in their agenda

as a final statement, Robert A Heinlein's comment on voting is quite correct, 'whenever you have the chance to vote do so, there may be no one or nothing that you want to vote for, but there is almost always someone or something that you want to vote against'

since i live in a 'blue' state and district, it does not matter a whole lot who i vote 'for' so i find myself voting more and more for independents and against most propositions

bummer

Oh, I agree, I don't watch him. I like very little cable news these days. I read most of my news.
