8th grader suspended and arrested for wearing an NRA t-shirt??

The article I provided says the police were called because of the chaos in the cafeteria, not to arrest the child. Usually, after police are called, they assemble the parties involved to investigate. It was uring the ourselves of the investigation that Marum ran into trouble with the police. My speculation is he was trying to get the schools version and the kid kept talking, the police ask him to sit down and he continued to talk, so he was arrested.

The kid will get his hearing at the school board and in court.
He will indeed get his hearing in court, and the school board. IMO, the father is smart for getting people behind him before meeting with the school board, they are elected, they'll hear much better when they realize their constituency are listening.

My sole point was that I would go this far and more to defend my kid in this circumstance and wanted to make it clear why I would. This assumption that the father caused it all promoted by many in this thread is ridiculously assumptive and beyond foolish. I support defending this kid as much as I would support defending the kid with a Brady or pro-abortion or Obama or whatever shirt they chose that was within the rules.

Then don't believe me. I'm certainly not going to post identifying info here. And it's really clear you didn't read any of my comments about the shirt, because if you had, you'd have known that I never criticized it. I criticized the father for making the whole thing a media event and I criticized the kid for the way he handled conflict.

Before going before an elected body like a school board to argue your cause it is always wise to inform the electorate, the easiest way if you can get it is through news coverage. It is a poor assumption that the father is doing this for fame, it is a wise choice to get the constituency behind you before meeting with elected officials.

I would defend my child's right to wear the shirt, but my child would be in deep shit for not sitting down when told to do so by the police, especially at the age of this middle schooler.

What again was he arguing his case about? What caused that event? Do you think he was talking about his right to wear a shirt to the police when they told him to sit down? I'll give you a hint, it all had something to do with a t-shirt...

Yes, it does, you are unwilling, as always to admit you are in error.

He is not in error.....the kids in the cafeteria reacted to the teacher making a big deal of this tshirt.....HE started the disturbance....thats pretty obvious from
what we know at this moment.

I'll give you that, it is always wise to do what the cops say. Although I'd be a bit disappointed that my kid talked to them to begin with if I wasn't there. I have standing orders that when the cops become involved not to say a thing until one of us gets there. Not in their own defense, not for a bribe... Just tell them that they'll have to wait for their parents to talk with them...

There was a meeting last night. Silence since...

If he had read either of our other posts, he would see I approve of protest, but there is a proper way to do it, and I would not encourage my child to defy authority unless they are asking them to do something illegal or improper. It is my place as the parent to challenge the authorities.

Exactly, I have even instructed my kids when challenged by a teacher, they do not talk, the only thing they were to say is, I want to call my parents. The same with police

Did you watch the video I posted yesterday? The dad said he was going to accompany his kid to school and bring a lawyer, the media, NRA supporters and members of his gun club.

Yup. Again, before standing up to elected authority (like school boards) and/or their employees (teachers/principals) it is always wise to stack the hand as much as possible, it is already stacked in favor of "authority" you should do what you can to ensure that they will listen. If it includes bringing some of the constituency with you, it is still wise. One of the best ways to do that is with media coverage, if you can get it. Most of the time it won't be available, but I won't look down on somebody who appears to be making wise choices. Even if I don't like the kid.

Bring em by the bus loads, if their testimony is respectful, and if the board agrees, the boys record is wiped clean and the teacher may even be disciplined.

I think because this is the kids first offense, I think it is mostly likely the cop was trying to teach him a lesson, the charges are likely to be dropped or he will do community service and the record won't show the offense.

He should be teaching his son that life's unfair and the rules are sometimes petty, so suck it up and wear the shirt on weekends.

My kids' school system had various clothing restrictions through the years. One I remember was those wife beater t-shirts the football players started to wear. The principal said "no can do". A few parents (one in particular a coach's wife) threw a hissy fit. Another one was the length of mini skirts. They had to be long enough so that when the girl sat down or bent over, you couldn't see all the way to Munchkin land.

What kind of idiot sues over a school's clothing requirement or restriction? What kind of lesson's being taught, that if you don't like a requirement take it to court?

Only in America.

Suing over a length of a skirt is not the same thing as suing over the right to free speech. I remember hearing about lefties suing over the right to wear black armbands to protest a war. I would defend their right to do that, you would tell them to "suck it up" and "do as you're told"... This is what I'm talking about Christie....

You said that if I "read the rest of your posts" I would "see that you supported his right"... I don't see that.

Wish we had the audio evidence of the school calling the cops and asking them to come arrest a kid because they don't like his t-shirt.

And yet you don't seem to be concerned to view the video that would support the kid "creating a disturbance"; or would that just destroy your entire presentation of this being the kid's fault.

What lesson would that be?
To shut up and be a sheep, just because some people want to be sheared.

Do you actually read what people write or do you just look for opportunities to shoot off your mouth?

SF wrote: "You think abusive teachers is trivial." I responded that "the kid wasn't abused."

Asking someone to turn his shirt inside out is not abuse, stop trivializing the word to make a point.

What a maroon.

You think abuse is limited to physical?

His rights were most certainly abused.

The same kind that sue for a picture of Jesus that has been in the school for 66 years to be taken down.
