I'm marine fabricator. And every day on my way to work (or school) I pass about 100 or so signs asking for skilled laborers. Signs that have been up...oh some for 2 years now. You'd think some of the UAW guys in the area would be qualified for these jobs (I am in Detroit after all). The skill isn't there. Doesn't mean people can't learn it, but it does mean people haven't. So yeah, there are plenty of jobs in industry.

Now if you wanted to say that companies aren't willing to train unskilled laborers, yeah, I'd agree with that. That's part of the reason for the skilled labor gap.

I agree...much like manufacturing labor itself, training has been outsourced....at the trainee's expense....and it's God awfully expensive compared to when it was done in-house.

In a democracy you dont have to have 100% agreemwnt about how we spend the tax dollars we all pay.

ss and medicare are neither entitlements nor charity. i have paid ss and later medicare payroll taxes all of my working life. i am now retired and am being told that ss and medicare trust funds are inadequate to pay for what the government promised because previous federal elected officials ignored the actuarial tables and kept kicking the can down the road until there is no longer a road to kick the can down and are facing reneging on the promises made for ss and medicare.

the repugs are the anti tax party that refused to properly assess payroll taxes to keep ss and medicare funded

also, it did not help that both the dims and repugs placed additional unfunded requirements on ss and medicare because there was money there (lbj was the worst of the lot, he stole ss funds to pay for the viet nam conflict, ss used to be fully vested until he came along)

the repugs are the most sociopathic since they oppose any form of social safety net, including unemployment insurance of which the first 6 months are paid for as an insurance program funded by employers as part of an employee's compensation and when times are bad, the federal government extends unemployment payments as part of the social safety net

medicaid is also part of the federal safety net which would not be needed if there was single payer health care for all
