It was quite a good remark.....at the very least, it was absolutely true......
Romney advocating tax breaks certainly wouldn't mean a damn thing to that 47% that pay nothing to begin with.....
that was his message and makes perfect sense.....even though it was spun, lied about, and mis-characterized to mean something totally different than that..
The liars, with the media as allies, did a super job of character assassination with that line as they always do....perfectly done....
Here is the entire comment made by Romney. Sure, it's about taxes, but it's about a lot more than taxes. I've highlighted sections of the "speech" that signify what, exactly, offended the working class and retired of this country. These words underscore Romney's utter disdain for those less fortunate than him.
There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they’re entitled to healthcare, to food, to housing, to you-name-it, —it’s entitlement, and the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And that—I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. So he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean, that’s what they sell every four years. And so, my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 percent in the center.
Next, let's take a look at those comments:
1. "dependent on government": 100% of Americans are dependent upon our government. It's not just the poor who depend on the government. We all, collectively, depend on the government to ensure our food is safe, our roads are safe, our children are educated, our borders are secure, our military is strong, our investments are secure, and so on..."Dependence upon government", you see, is not class exclusive.
2. "they are victims": These people don't believe they are "victims". Ten percent of these people are the retired and elderly. They're no more victims than you or I. They've raised children, fought in wars, made sacrifices, kept our nation free. Others in the group aren't victims, either. They're parents, raising children, trying to make ends meet. Others are students, enriching their minds in order to become our future leaders.
3. "they’re entitled to healthcare, to food, to housing": "Entitled"? No. "deserve?"
YES! For the exact same reasons I detailed above. These people raised children, fought in wars, made sacrifices, kept our nation free. Others, again, are raising our leaders of tomorrow the best they can and deserve the best education, the healthiest food, and have a vested interest in our future.
4. "people who pay no income tax": Aside from the elderly, two-thirds pay other taxes such as property, excise, sales, etc. Often at a higher rate than the rich who take advantage of sales tax exemptions to corporations. Another group within the 47%, students and young children, will be paying income taxes in the future. Hence, the next comment, "Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax" is a lie.
5. "my job is not to worry about those people": Sorry, Mr. Romney.
Your job is to take care of all 100% of Americans. Period. That is the job of the President.
6. "they should take personal responsibility": Really? Since when is raising children, fighting in wars, making sacrifices, keeping our nation free. ensuring our leaders of tomorrow get the best education they can, eat the healthiest food, and being vested interest in our future not taking "personal responsibility"?
Out of these numbers, Mr. Romney, how many people actually don't take personal responsibiity? The drug addicts and alcoholics? The welfare cheaters? Take this into context: When Florida tried to drug test welfare recipients, less than 2% tested positive. One would think that number would also apply to this.
So...we have 2% of the 47% who "take no personal responsibility".
And a former presidential candidate who professes to "take no personal responsibility" for 47% of our nation.
This is why Romney lost the election.
