Labor unions prevent nonunion power workers from helping in NJ.

I would agree that there are hard workers in the unions. My problem is how they protect the lazy ones. They need to step up and get rid of those employees on their own. It only hurts them in the long run.

You think the Teamsters union is corrupt they aint got shit on the Sanitation unions. Particularly on the east coast. I kid you not I've worked on union contracts in the Philly area where the reps had names like Columbo and Bananno and were big time corrupt pieces of shit. That's one thing nice about our corporate supply plan in regards to vendors. We have an ISO based supply plan and each vendor has to be approved and recertified annually by the company and if a company were doing business with gets infested with these mobster thugs, we just simply don't recert them and strike them off our supply plan and cease doint business with them.

But on the whole, those thugs don't represent the main body of union workers. What's the old saying "A few bad apples spoils the bunch."?

I'd say my main issue with unions is not that they protect lazy workers. I think Bgfrn is right there. The employer hires people and not the unions and there's only so much a union can do to protect nonproductive people. My biggest beef against unions is that they can be breeding dens for mediocrity. Kinda like working for the government.
 
Yeah, I remember the last time I told the colonel to screw off and went on strike. I got 100 shares in Halliburton and better medical.

I worked for state government exactly one year and was forced to join the union.

After a few months I started working for one of the old guys that everyone else feared because he was so ornery. I gave his crap right back to him and completed my work assignments way ahead of time and quickly earned his respect. He had a small budget re-vamping railroad crossings and instead of turning out two designs per week I stated turning out 10. After several weeks of this we had lunch and he asked me very sincerely: "what are you doing here?" and we had a long conversation of where my efforts and talent would take me working a state job, and the answer was nothing more than the four guys that I was doing their work for. He confirmed what I had observed was that there was about 10% of the employees that did about 90% of the work, and they weren't promoted any differently than the remaining 90%. So why should I be one of the 10% when I could work for a private company and make money based on productivity instead of time spent denting the seat cushion with my skinny white ass.

A guy that they hired the same time frame as me did mediocre work for his first six months and then after the probationary period was over did nothing, literally. It took them three years to get rid of him, because, of course, of the union.

I know they don't... but they very typically are the public faces of their respective unions. Very similar to how extremists from the right and left tend to be more vocal and thus become the respective faces (at least according to the opposing party) of their parties.

Thankfully I have never encountered the Sanitation unions, nor any on the east coast. Obviously I am biased by the past, but my guess would be the Jersey/Boston/NY/Chicago unions are among the must thuggish in the country.

Yes the employer hires. It is the ability to FIRE that they often don't have when dealing with unions. I would strongly disagree (especially from personal experience) that there isn't much the union can do to protect the lazy. If the employee is fairly new, then you are right... but those members that have 7-10 years+... try and fire them. Not gunna happen.

Unions do indeed tend to lead to mediocrity because for the most part raises tend to be based on seniority, not performance. Thus there is no real reason to exert extra effort as there is no benefit to it.

I'm fairly lucky in that while I've worked in union shops, I've never been eligible for union membership. The union at both my old bindery job was mostly a formality and they all busted their asses and took a hit when required. The union at my current shop is also pretty reliable and there is little in the way of conflict. Of course being in Detroit I see how unions can destroy an entire industry if unchecked.
