Fatal shooting at Denver screening of The Dark Knight Rises

So I get up on this rather hot Sunday, take a leisurely breakfastnd stroll to my computero see what has been saidabout this shooting while I slept.
What a bunch of crap!
Even from those who are usually sensible.
This gun, that gun, this ammendment, that ammendment, this calibre, that calibre, this size, that size.
STOP STOP STOP STOP

Yes, STOP WATCHING IT! STOP READING ABOUT IT! Turn off your television or computer and go outside. Turn on some music or watch a DVD. We live in an age where the media believes we want to hear every little detail repeated in a 24/7 loop for weeks on end, any time something like this happens. It's not just tragedy, they do the same thing when a royal couple weds. And what the hell were you expecting here? I think it's pretty fucking astounding we've managed almost 500 posts without someone blaming this on Bush, or turning the thread into a debate about Obamacare.

The answer lies NOT in what you carry in your hand, the answer is what you carry in your head!

As thoughtful and touching as this sounds, I have to again point out... THERE IS NO ANSWER HERE! It's important to remember, while you search for "answers" that simply don't exist, 65-million LEGAL gun owners in America, killed NO ONE here! A crazy person did something senseless and insane, and he wasn't even thinking about following the law... which I do believe includes not mowing down innocents in a theater, even here in America.

When I was very young we all had cap pistols and played cops and robbers and cowboys and indians and if we didnt have a cap pistol we had a piece of wood or just our fingers. We died, terrible lingering hollywood deaths in the street.
Then we grew out of it and our interests moved on to, I dunno, bird watching or train spotting or something, then we discovered girls and music and fashion and jobs.
Grow up America!
Find something healthier to occupy your immature minds.

Is THAT what you think this was? Someone bored and immature, finding occupation for their immature mind? This was a MAD MAN! Do you not have people ever go mad in England? Whenever some nutjob does something similar to this, how would it make you feel for others to presume everyone in England is somehow reflected? Are you really this stupid and shallow-minded? Can you really not see how ignorant this is?

Bang bang, your dead doesn't mean your mate falls over and then gets up to play again.
YOUR mates,
YOUR citizens DONT wake up.
EVER.
I wonder if you really get that!

Again, I think the overwhelming and vast majority of us DO get this, and it hasn't a thing to do with this senseless act of madness.

You call this guy in Colorado a nut job? YOU call him a nut job? YOU who, faced with such a disaster, argue about the size of friggin' bullets? Yeah. You sure teach the rest of the world about being civilised.

What are we supposed to do? Say things to comfort you? Say things to make you feel better? Suddenly have an epiphany and ban all handguns in America? Just what the fuck did you expect to wake and find here? What hoop will we law-abiding citizens who did nothing wrong, have to jump through in order to appease your conscience that you've "done something" about this, that you've "found an answer" for this? AGAIN... there is NO ANSWER! This is a tragic an unfortunate act of a person who was not mentally stable, there is nothing SANE people could have done differently to prevent this.

Dixie, I am going to openly thank you for your post. There are few things on which we agree and this is no exception yet somewhere, buried, is a person who was prepared to actually think.
Thank you sir.
My point however, was not that THIS person was insane, but that ANY person who thinks it normal to desire a device specifically designed to kill his fellow man is a lunatic, a danger to the public and, of course, a danger to himself. You make the point that this was a tragic actit was, BUT it was foreseeable. We have known for years that this would happen if you do not change your attitudes to guns and violence. No, we did not know it would happen here, but we knew it was going to happen somewhere and here is something else:
IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.
And next time it happens you will be saying it was caused by a madman and that it was tragic and your president will travel to the scene with more empty words and people like me will be saying that we told you so.

Why should anyone give one iota of the smallest measure of time, caring what you think of them? The remarkable arrogance, and conceit you display here is astounding.

You make the point that this was a tragic actit was, BUT it was foreseeable. We have known for years that this would happen if you do not change your attitudes to guns and violence.

Yet earlier I asked you a pointed question, on whether or not Hong Kong still had gun violence, or death. You deflected by offering UN stats on homicides. The answer is 'yes'. Yes they do still surprisingly have gun violence and death....Why, how can that be? In your paradise of total gun control, and rules for even owning a knife? I am frankly shocked that you don't move over to Japan where they kick in doors on the suspicion of even owning a gun.

And just who the hell are you anyway? What gives you the self inflated ego to presume that you should be the person to judge others in a manner that is repugnant, and offensive as it concerns what I or anyone else should own, or not own?

No, we did not know it would happen here, but we knew it was going to happen somewhere and here is something else:

Well, you are probably right about isolated incidents that happen. Guess what, someone in HK will die of gun violence this year as well. And if it is by chance you, or someone you know, just rest easy in the fact that by law you wouldn't be able to possess the tool to defend yourself against that. And what is worse is, arrogant, misguided dolts believe that it is their place in the world to express how stupid they think other that don't think like they do are, before the victims families have had the chance to even bury their fallen. Now thats class...Jerk.

Well I just fundamentally disagree with you. I think the overwhelming majority of people who own a gun, have no intention whatsoever of ever using it to kill other people. I don't think they purchased their guns thinking about the possibility.

Also, this has NOTHING to do with our collective attitudes about guns or fascination with action movies. This was a random act of insanity by a mad man, it has nothing to do with what SANE society thinks. That is the connection you make that is insulting. You want to believe that American hunters and sportsmen, as well as firearms enthusiasts, are all running around with minds like this crazy person, just waiting to snap. You want to think that crazy people do insane shit because of something normal people are doing. That if we can only change how we think, there won't be any crazy people doing insane shit... but guess fucking what, mate? There will STILL BE CRAZY PEOPLE, AND THEY WILL STILL DO INSANE SHIT!

How many mass shootings have their been in your country (and others) and how many will there have to be in the future before we all, you and me, until we all come to our senses and take positive action.
t was not my intention to insult you. It was my intention to drag the discussion away from the nonsense about what kind of killing device or how many loonies walk the streets to the realisation that there is probably more violence in men's minds now than ever before. That in your country, at least, you see nothing wrong with loonies owning arsenals of weapons and killing children. No Dixie. Dont shout that it doesnt include you ... It includes everyone.
I have reminded my avid readers before, but do you remember West Side Story and what Doc said in the drug store when when Anybodies was being roughed up? That was in the 1950s. One of the Sharks had a gun. A gun. Not an arsenal of guns. And a fight, at the worst involved flick knives.
We have certainly come a long way since then.

so then violent rap lyrics had nothing to do with the violence in the black commumity?

mmmm I seem to remember you thought differently back about a decade when we used to talk about it on politics.com

I gave you the latest United Nations statistics for crime in Hong Kong. There was no mention of gun crime and no mention of premeditated murder. There were FIVE deaths. The traditional method of gangland execution is by chopper or what you might call meat cleaver. I have no idea why you keep bringing Japan into the discussion. Would you like to explain?
Do you call everyone who knows more than you do arrogant? Perhaps that is why you are a no nothing stupid yank.
(I'd far rather be a jerk than a yank by the way)
But who am I to say? After all Ifoolishly, was civil to you.

I gave you the latest United Nations statistics for crime in Hong Kong. There was no mention of gun crime and no mention of premeditated murder.

So you intentionally deflected the direct question...Thanks for admitting your dishonesty.

There were FIVE deaths.

By firearm?

The traditional method of gangland execution is by chopper or what you might call meat cleaver.

Great, you going to outlaw meat cleavers as well...?

I have no idea why you keep bringing Japan into the discussion. Would you like to explain?

Because they have arguably the most restrictive gun laws in the world, where your door can be kicked in on the mere suspicion of having a gun, or ammo. Yet, even they have death that occurs by gun violence.

Do you call everyone who knows more than you do arrogant?

I don't claim to know more than someone else, that is how polite people discuss things....A concept that obviously eludes you.

Perhaps that is why you are a know nothing stupid yank.

The least you could do when insulting someone by saying that you are infinitely smarter than they are, is get the spelling right.....LOL....

But who am I to say? After all Ifoolishly, was civil to you.

You were? See, I don't consider condescending arrogance to be civil...

I guess the water is safe again now that it has been PROVED that the gunman was well-prepared for guns in the audience .. even though I don't really believe that such a fact well deter those who think their love of guns is more important than the victims from refusing to seek real solutions.

Why do people need automatic and semi-automatic weapons .. with clips?

Why should that be legal?

regardless of your beliefs, why is it necessary for me to surrender my weapons in order for you to feel that people are safer?

Why do people need automatic and semi-automatic weapons .. with clips?
because a gun is only effective if it's loaded. would you be more comfortable and happy if decent citizens were outgunned by criminals?

Why should that be legal?
why should it be illegal?

It's called in the public interest.

because a gun is only effective if it's loaded. would you be more comfortable and happy if decent citizens were outgunned by criminals?

Then why not bazookas? Some criminals have them.

Respectfully, this train of logic makes no sense to me.

why should it be illegal?

It's called in the public interest .. with the understanding that "public" is not important to the right.

It's called in the public interest.
sorry, i value my life over the public interest. I reject that theory.

and should we not be able to fight back effectively against criminals also?

It's called in the public interest .. with the understanding that "public" is not important to the right.
interesting. i've noticed that depending upon the given circumstances, the 'public' gets to take a back seat from the left and/or the right.

interesting. i've noticed that depending upon the given circumstances, the 'public' gets to take a back seat from the left and/or the right.

Again respectfully, but this train of logic makes absolutely no sense to me.

That is a paranoia I never want to share.

I am with you, friend. I just can't live in fear, especially, that hose sworn to protect and service are going to turn on me.

with respect to you as well, why is it non sensical to you for someone to value their own lives? it's something that is inherent in all living beings, that of self preservation. how can it be paranoia if it's a trait we all have?

I am with you, friend. I just can't live in fear, especially, that hose sworn to protect and service are going to turn on me.

after all that i've shown you, you still don't believe that cops and/or military would turn on the citizenry at the orders of their masters?

I am with you, friend. I just can't live in fear, especially, that hose sworn to protect and service are going to turn on me.

I do not presume to dictate how one should protect themselves and loved ones. I don't presume that responsibility and recognize that everyone's situation is different.

All I seek are reasonable solutions to the epidemic of mindless gun violence .. which is never going to be solved by more guns.

I would think that automatic weapons with a clip would not be necessary for the vast majority of Americans to reasonably protect themselves.

I don't see how that's not a reasonable place to start.

after all that i've shown you, you still don't believe that cops and/or military would turn on the citizenry at the orders of their masters?

I know it happens, I just don't live in fear of it. It seems if they turn on me, from your reports, my resistance is futile, so I go down immediately, you prolong the inevitable, in the end, you are still dead.
