Trump was the first promising to "drain the swamp". The creatures that inhabit the swamp are reacting exactly as anyone with any experience with the operations of a government agency expect them to. Why is this a surprise to you?

The simplest theory is one that applies known human behavior; the basic motivations of money or power. In this case it is both.

Conspiracy theory isn't even considered in my book. Instead, I think of a typical high school class. There's always The Clique, made up of the most popular kids, the football team starters, the cheerleaders, the popular kids for one reason or another, and their wannabees. There's no clandestine meetings where shit is planned out; it just happens. Anyone outside The Clique gets ignored, unless you are vocally against them, then they actively try to burn you.

What I should have said is that you can't control the majority of voters.

In Hillary-Bernie case, the D Party used its tried-n-true tactic if identity politics, setting women voters against young naive folk. They controlled the debate schedule, campaign fiances, etc. This is all known and documented.

Oh, wait, we're not supposed to believe in conspiracy theories...
