Happy Indigenous People's Day!

Yeah. Doh. We've changed hands more than a dealer in Vegas.
Incorrect.

The Americas were isolated from the cradle of human evolution in Africa and Eurasia, and it was not possible for humans or their hominid ancestors to migrate here until about 20,000 years ago.

DNA haplotype evidence, and the lack of genetic diversity in the original indigenous inhabitants of America strongly indicate there were not successive waves of migration to the Americas from across various regions of the globe....

All of the original inhabitants of the Americas originated from a relatively small gene pool in northeast Asia. Though they may have trickled in over a long period of time.

European colonizers did not arrive in any substantial numbers on the scene until about four centuries ago

That was Owl who said 20,000. Not me. Point is.......others have lived on this land.

she was right.

The only people who lived permanently on this land from 20,000 BC until 1600 AD were groups of closely genetically related humans who came from a relatively small gene pool of ancestors in northeast Asia.

Hello The Sage of Main Street,

It sounds like this is merely an attempt to spread hatred.

The best thing for America would be everyone trying to get along better.

There is a theory, which could well be true, that the Aztecs originated from Utah.

Did the Ancient Aztecs originate in modern-day Utah?

Aztlan comes from an ancient Nahuatl legend which suggests that there were seven tribes that once inhabited Chicomoztoc – “the place of the seven caves”.

These tribes allegedly represented the seven Nahua cultures: Acolhua, Chalca, Mexica, Tepaneca, Tlahuica, Tlaxcalteca, and Xochimilca. Eventually, they left their caves and settled down as a single culture near Aztlán.

According to their theory, the Aztecs originated from Utah’s maze of canyonlands, where experts have found ancient paintings on canyon walls which they believe are eerily similar to symbols depicted on the legendary Aztec calendar.

According to Orosco and Rivas-Salmon, the origin of the Aztecs is written down on Utah’s canyon walls, the home of Quetzalcoatl, pointing towards ancient rock art depicting snakes with four rattles,

Echoes of a Prehistoric Horror

American Indians were always cavemen and always will be. They have survived long after their evolutionary expiration date, which is a clear, present, and existential threat to the fittest. It is an academic myth that the Neanderthal were the last that needed to expire in order for human progress to advance.

I remember when the proposal was gaining traction. I wrote a letter to our chief back then basically outlining the stance I have laid out here and urged him to propose choosing another day. I just feel that it is divisive to choose that day…especially when presented with the word “replacing.”

Fair point. :good4u:

Far longer than that. As I pointed out, humans have been here for 20,000+ years (that we can accurately date, anyways). Europeans have only been here a bit over 500 years.

Stretch is one of the "might makes right" group. If you have the might, then it's just fine to overtake, murder, and evict those with less might. Then you get to write the history books, and get outraged if anyone dares to bring up the thousands of years of history before your foreign ancestors genocided them.

There are no genetic or archaeological records that indicate any different.

To be fair, Debbie's logic is no different than what has existed through all humanity except for the past few hundred years....and still exists in many parts of the world.

A very un-christian attitude to imagine one can bully people into giving their property to you.

We have seen enough posts in the last three days calling the indigenous inhabitants of North America savages and cavemen, to get a general feel for the regard Deplorables hold native peoples in.

My two cents: the colonization of the American continent by Europeans was inevitable. But it was not inevitable that it happened the way it did.

While the Vikings did not stay in North America permanently, I am reasonably confident that in our lifetime, archaeologists will find evidence of additional 11th century Norse settlements in Canada beyond the single confirmed one at L'Anse aux Meadows

I was thinking of the Spanish in Mexico.

Excellent point and agreed.

OTOH, the same can be said of Genghis Khan in Asia. :)

W-h-a-t-e-v-er. geeesh. We are all saying the same dang thing. Others were here before...others will be here after. Daaaaaayum! Ya'll just gotta fight even when we're saying basically the SAME thing. :palm:
At the rate we're going, Chairman Biden will circle us right back to China (Asians) anyway pretty soon. Columbus Day will end up being called Mao Day or something. So, all this debate is moot.

Infighting among the Indians as well for land...bullies, I guess. LOL

Yeah, the parts where the religious fundies, the illiterate, and the gullible hang out. Which is fine if that's your thing, but don't try to make it our thing too.

Nope. They had no concept of land ownership as we think of it. They did understand though that some areas had more game, grew better crops, had cleaner fresher water than others. That's what they tried to protect, as others tried to move in and grab it.

Pretty much the same as your Euro ancestors and mine did, trying to protect their crofts and farms and hunting grounds from the Romans, the Goths, the Normans, the Saracens. It's the story of humankind. Too bad you feel like you somehow deserve to be looked at as "superior" because this time your guys won by exterminating the original people here.
