Happy Indigenous People's Day!

Hello The Sage of Main Street,

The people of the Mayflower would have died without help from the indigenous people.

The savages wanted to gain the trust of the Pilgrims so they could later come back and steal everything in sight.

I am old enough to remember when a lot of conservatives were angry about Martin Luther King day being established - and it took some of them years to fully accept it.

Critical Sage Theory

I have a dream that someday posters will judge me by the content of my posts and not by the color of my avatar, so I fully support Doctored King's trickery.

Agreed on the memory of the controversy. TBH, a "Civil Rights Day" was a better idea rather than making it to only one man. It's the only Public Holiday named for a single person.

With all respect to Dr. King, he's not Jesus. He's a great man among many great Americans in our history and, specifically, in the history of Civil Rights.

Still, it's the idea of civil rights that's important, not reverence to a single man like Trumpers trying to suck off The Donald.

For sure, I do not think the holiday implies the Sainthood of Dr. King.

When MLK day was first established, there was a long tradition of public holidays named after people. There used to be a Lincoln holiday, a Washington holiday, and some states and municipalities still recognize a Colombus day. In some southern states there are public holidays for confederate generals and confederate heroes.

The idea of a generic civil rights holiday is a pretty good one.

It sounds like this is merely an attempt to spread hatred.

The best thing for America would be everyone trying to get along better.

Public Holiday. No doubt there's some fucked up town in America having a NAMBLA Appreciation day, but I was speaking specifically about Federal Public holidays, paid day off.

To be clear, I fully support a Civil Rights Day Federal Public holiday or some other holiday that acknowledges that our nation is greater for our differences as well as our similarities.

It's deifying one man that chafes. Sure, at one time we did have Lincoln Day and Washington Day, but now we don't. Why is MLK Day different?

My theory is that people want to put a face to this country's long, and sometimes violent civil rights movement.

Stupid people? People who can't comprehend that idea the, while men live and die, an idea lives as long as there is someone to carry it?

Tying the Civil Rights movement to MLK endangers the idea since revelations of MLK's shortcomings (such as adultery) then taints the movement.

It's the idea that important, not the man. That's what's wrong with the Party of Trump; deifying a man.

I been watching a couple of PBS documentaries on amazon Prime about the ideological divisiveness in America. It's more than about Trump, he's just the result. According to America's Great Divide: From Obama to Trump part 1 and 2 and Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 11/9 this has been brewing for a long time. Trump is just the result. Both docs seem to come to the conclusion there's no end in sight. We're not only divided ideologically but geographically by the same type of people and it's seemingly hopeless at this point.

A great point about "just the result" and agreed.

History proves our nation has been through contentious times before and we resolved them with only one civil war.

Anyone who thinks the US is ripe for civil war now is fooling themselves. No major business or group wants to see the economy broken in half.

It's *somewhat* correct. Keep in mind who "won" and who wrote the history of those times.

Doesn't matter. Just because you encounter a culture that practices something you don't like does not give you the right to wipe them out.

The Greeks practiced both homosexuality and pederasty. Imagine our Western culture now if someone had wiped them out before the *good* (our value judgment) parts of their culture informed Western civilization as it did.

Basically Universities and places of higher learning. And they still do. No corrections to those records as of yet. Just pointing that out.

They talk about civil war and no, we're not that stupid. The two sides just hate each other and truly believe the other side wants to destroy the country. E.g. the left actually believes the right is allied with Russia and the right actually believes the left is allied with China.

Biden becomes first president to proclaim Indigenous Peoples' Day

"Oct. 9 (UPI) -- President Joe Biden is the first president to issue a proclamation for Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Biden issued the proclamation on Friday, recognizing Monday as Indigenous People's Day, and marking the first time a U.S. president has done so.

"Our country was conceived on a promise of equality and opportunity for all people -- a promise that, despite the extraordinary progress we have made through the years, we have never fully lived up to," Biden wrote in the proclamation. "That is especially true when it comes to upholding the rights and dignity of the Indigenous people who were here long before colonization of the Americas began."

"History demonstrates that Native American people -- and our nation as a whole -- are best served when tribal governments are empowered to lead their communities and when federal officials listen to and work together with Tribal leaders when formulating federal policy that affects tribal nations," Biden wrote.

"The contributions that Indigenous peoples have made throughout history -- in public service, entrepreneurship, scholarship, the arts, and countless other fields -- are integral to our Nation, our culture, and our society," he continued."

Indigenous People's Day

1. Female warriors

Native American women fought alongside men in battles, the most popular among them being the Buffalo Calf Road Woman of the Northern Cheyenne tribe.

2. Popcorn

The Indigenous Americans were the first to domesticate the strains of maize that produced popcorn thousands of years ago.

3. Maria Tallchief

The first Native American (and American) to dance at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and with the Paris Opera Ballet was Maria Tallchief.

4. Hockey

The Native American tribes of Foxes, Saux, and Assiniboine played a game called shinny, which is where hockey came from.

5. The sequoia tree

The sequoia tree is named after the revered Cherokee leader Sequoyah, who created an alphabet for his people.

fuck him its columbus day

Very few Americans believe that so much that they'd risk death fighting over it. There's a reason that 2/3s of the Insurrectionists currently arrested had previous mental health issues.

Forums always have a higher percentage of mental health case along with people who are dysfunctional nut jobs.

The left on this board certainly prove that! Lol!

Aztecs came here from South America, then the Inuits from Canada & Greenland, tribal wars broke out, then Europeans. The continent has been "discovered" by many.
Everyone who came here was "indigenous" to somewhere else.
