How about a forum competition ? State the date that the death-toll hits one million Americans. Closest to the date is the winner.

Winning entrant gets to reserve a cemetery plot of their choice.

Closing criteria for entries- 975,000 victims.

I would never be so morbid but there appear to be many who casually disregard the loss of American lives and would think nothing of it.

When I look at these numbers each day I always think of the personal lives affected and the scale of tragedy. I wish people would be more concerned about others. I wish people would recognize that we are all in this together and we depend on one another to form our collective human defense to this viral assault.

When I first began this thread shortly after the pandemic began I would get the new data as soon as it was available at the end of each day. It was so somber I found it was not a good habit to be looking at this stuff just before going to bed, so I switched to waiting for the next day and accepting that the posts would always be one day behind.

As far as when we will hit 1 million deaths that will be hard to predict. We could even still hope it never happens. It would be easy to assume the 2000 deaths per day will continue and calculate the 21 days required to reach a million from the current level, but nicely enough, the number of serious / critical cases is dropping very rapidly and is currently at less than half of it's recent peak. That is a preceptor to deaths, so it is logical to assume that the death rate will decrease accordingly in the weeks ahead.

Let's hope the deaths taper off to nothing soon.
