Corona Virus Peak Watch Thread

In fairness, the old way of counting coronavirus deaths in England (the other three countries used different methods) was to count anyone who died of anything if s/he had ever been diagnosed as having corvid19 - so that someone who recovered from it three months ago and was run over by a bus yesterday still counted. They have three ways now, of which the one to go for is that which counts all deaths in which corvid is mentioned in the death certificate. That lot take longer to be tote up.

People who are familiar with the scientific method, obviously not the science deniers, knows that it's all about data collection and assessment. A rough count is just that, a rough count; something used to get a grasp of the problem. Refining that data takes time as you pointed out. The US may not have an accurate body count from this pandemic for 5-10 years just like it took several years to assess how many Americans we lost in Vietnam. Some of those Vietnam deaths came years after the war ended because it took that long for their wounds to kill them.

Police and prosecutors use a similar method for assault and murder cases. Shoot, stab or beat a person who lives and it's assault. If they die two years later from their wounds, it's murder.

When I look at that Worldometer/coronavirus page, it amazes me to watch new cases drop in places where the idiot govt. finally instituted masks and social distancing policies. While meanwhile, in states with other idiot governors who DON'T, the new cases are horrendous.

The case count in both France and, especially Spain, is rising as they relax restrictions.

Not a doctor, but my understanding is that without a cure or vaccine, the best any government can do is minimize the damage until a cure or vaccine can be found. The problem in the US is that we didn't even try for several months and now it appears out of control.

Yep. Some states did pretty well, but without a consistent national response, this is what we ended up with. Our patchwork, piecemeal approach plus our horrible health care system are also to blame.

According to Deplorables I have spoken to, masks are for sheeple, they are not medically effective, and requirements to wear them are an assault on our cherished freedumbs

The numbers will hinge on the choices we make.

Wear a mask, stay at home as much as possible, socially distance, if sick isolate 14 days. Numbers will go way down. That simple.

If we behave like Trump, they will rise forever.

None must have any well paying office jobs, because they all require reduced staffing at 50% max, social distancing and wearing masks at all times.
If you sit on the front porch next to I95 and the closest town is 50 miles away, and the only reason to get out of bed is to walk to the rusty mailbox
by the highway to get your welfare check, I suppose you can go without a mask.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

And where it is out of control is no place to open up schools. Talk about a bad idea.

The same ideology is being spread on this forum by at least three people and twice as many sock puppets.

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

Maybe we should start calling it our 'Death Care System.'

Our prez has talked about this being the worst week of the pandemic for the USA.

We know better than to just believe everything he says, so let's try to find some real answers.

Here is a site with up to date statistics:

Worldometer

We can scroll down and see the US statistics for ACTIVE CASES and NEW DEATHS.

These are the figures which will tell us when we have reached 2 important peaks in the pandemic.

When people test positive, that data is added to the ACTIVE CASES.

When people either die or recover, they are removed from the ACTIVE CASES.

NEW DEATHS is the deaths per day for that day.

We will first see a peak in the ACTIVE CASES, followed by the peak in the NEW DEATHS.

That means we can watch these numbers change and know when we have reached those peaks.

Currently, the figures are:

ACTIVE CASES 420,611.

NEW DEATHS 1,656.

Let's try to post the daily numbers so we can watch the trends and we will know when the peaks have been reached for the entire USA.

The morality rate just keeps reducing............the morality rate for everyone under70 years old? 0.04....the seasonal flu has a higher death rate than C19. This is becoming nothing but a joke. Obama resided over a Novel Virus outbreak that infected over 60 million US Citizens with a similar morality rate. C19 has over 50 million new cases to catch up with the Obama Administration. :bigthink:

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

Yep. Or Our Health Care System CEO Retirement Plan.

The goal of our health care system is to make money, not keep the nation as healthy as possible. Since stockpiling the needed supplies for a pandemic is not a money maker it is not done.

If we had a health care system where the goal is to keep the nation healthy then preparations for a possible pandemic would be part of the equation. The proper PPE would be on hand, ready if needed; not wished for by workers who need it but find none because it wasn't profitable to stockpile it.

Bingo! Capitalism, well-fettered capitalism, is the best economic system we've come up with so far. But this is where it fails and fails miserably.

Thank God our tories hadn't quite been able to destroy the NHS before the Lurgy struck!
