You can't identify the bad guy in that instance, only after the fact when it's too late to do anything about it.
So prior to the mass shooting, two guys strolled into the mall with guns and you don't know who was who.
You didn't know who the good guy was and who the bad guy was until after everything had already happened, which is too fucking late.

Guns don't magically appear in the hands of criminals, they get them from somewhere and since a criminal isn't buying a gun at Walmart, the only places they can get their guns are from people like you.
So you either lose your gun, someone steals it, you give it to someone, or you sell it to someone....those are the only ways a criminal can get a gun without just buying one at a store.
You are the supply. A criminal looks at your armory not as a deterrent, but as a supply. One of the top things criminals steal when they break into homes aren't appliances, aren't clothes, aren't food, they're guns.
When a criminal breaks into your house when you're not there, one of the things they are looking for are guns because they know there's a chance you won't tell anyone that your gun was stolen.
