What did Jordan Neely do to deserve being put in a chokehold?

It sure seems to me there was likely an easier and less deadly way to restrain him than a chokehold.

I think the guy who killed him overreacted, but I could be convinced otherwise cause I don’t see much evidence of what actually happened.

At first blush, it looks like manslaughter to me?

Neely threatened to kill people. Wrestlers use rear naked choke holds all the time. Yes it is unfortunate that Neely died but Neely is responsible for the events that led to his death.

I believe that's what he is charged with. He was a Marine. I wonder when they are taught hand-to-hand moves if the goal isn't to kill or completely disabled the enemy? I doubt if they're taught "safe" ways to subdue someone. Still, he really messed up but likely didn't mean to kill the disturbed young man. Guess we'll see what happens. It's good to know that citizens will step in when there's a possible dangerous situation.

Choke holds are against the rules of real wrestling. They are allowed in fake wrestling, but only fake choke holds. Choke holds unacceptably often lead to death. No one wants a bunch of high school wrestlers dying.

Do you have a citation that he threatened to kill?

If it was just verbal without a physical component I still don’t see a need for a choke hold.

If this guy was simply yelling at people, butting him in a chokehold was uncalled for, and if that’s what killed the guy, it’s manslaughter.

There is another thread with it in its title I’m not on my laptop now so you will have to look for it.Neely was threatening to kill people Penny did not know if he was armed or not. Taking an even bigger risk would be very dumb,

Neely was a serial felon and constant offender. He was mentally ill, and given his record of violence shouldn't have been on the streets at all. His life ended because he was acting violently and threatening to kill people on the subway. What should the normal people around him have done? Talk to him? He's insane. Run away? Why should everyone else run from a madman rather than confront and subdue him? Our society shouldn't be ruled by exceptions, but rather a general expected set of norms that if you break those, you are removed from society by being jailed, institutionalized, or otherwise separated where you will cause no harm or disruption to the general population.

I once had a mentally unstable guy come into my office acting weird. Took off his shirt, pulled his pants down halfway down his butt , and brandished what looked just like a gun that turned out to be a cigarette lighter.
Those types can be scary as hell. My heart was racing like mad. If I had a gun I may have instinctively shot him.
